Show THE PROGRAM Independent Feature Film Competition Presenting the current wave of the American independent communitys most innovative work, the 1991 Competition promises to be a highlight of this years Sundance Film Festival. Past Festival audiences have been the first to view such films as To Sleep with Anger, Metropolitan, House Party, For AH Mankind, sex, lies, and videotapes, and River's Edge. As always, a wide collection of dramatic and documentary films will screen as part of the Competition. Films in each category will be awarded a Grand Prize, a Cinematography Award, an Audience Award and a Filmmakers Trophy. For the first time, films in the dramatic section will also compete for a Screenwriters Award. Sundance Institutes 10th Anniversary Celebration special retrospective of films developed at the Sundance Institute over the past decade, including El Norte, 84 Charlie Mopic, A Dry White Season, Smooth Talk, The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez, and .A Trip to Bountiful, and a reunion of past and present alumni will highlight this celebration of the Institutes tenth anniversary and the independent ision and voices discovered there. A - A Salute to Robert Altman Robert Altman has distinguished himself through a body of work that sets its sights squarely on America-itmyths, culture, politics, and idiosyncrasies. He has proven himself to be constantly innovative in both subject and form, not only in the medium of film, but also in television, theatre, and even opera. As one of Hollywoods true mavericks, Altman remains fiercely independent, an uncompromising survivor of an artistically turbulent career. A retrospective of his most memorable films will round out this salute to a genuine iconoclast of American films:AfcCflbe and Mrs. Miller, Nashville, Three Women, Popeye, Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. s d The New Generation of Japanese Cinema The New Japanese Cinema is a broad, perhaps vague, concept, but it is still meaningful to distinguish this generations activity from those masters of Japanese filmmaking-Oz- u, Nlizoguchi, Kurosawa, Imamura and others-whos- e reputation is so overwhelming that it obscures all who follow in their wake. This survey will introduce the Japanese independent, including filmmakers who are now working regularly in the film industry, as well as those not so well established and others who are interested in maintaining their complete autonomy. Their work exhibits freshness and inspiration that new talent from the independent film world has always displayed and is sure to offer a preview of the future of one of the richest film traditions in the world.
