That afternoon they rounded up their livestock and abandoned the ranch, riding crosscountry through the wilderness to La Paz, Bolivia. And once again, they had managed to out-w- it their pursuers. At that time of the year, however, the livestock market was at a point of decline and profits for the fugitives were disasterous. There was nothing that they could do except mount their horses and return to the outlaw trail, with Etta riding between them, operating with as much coolness, daring, and physical fortitude as Butch and Longabaugh themselves. It is generally believed that Butch Cassidy, Harry Longabaugh and Etta Place had escaped the law by cooling their heels in Starr Valley, Wyo. If this is so then it was probably there that Etta learned the rudiments of shooting, mastering both the Colt .44 and the Winchester 94 Carbine, while Cassidy and Longabaugh became compatible to inconspicuous shoulder holsters, a necessity toward should their attempt fail in reaching South America. The Prior to 1905 other American outlaws, with their own interests in mind, had sifted into South America from the States. Many of their exploits have no doubt been credited to Cassidy, Longabaugh and Etta Place. Yet, I can only be reasonably certain of three particular robberies during the years 1905-0in which Etta actually took part. During these, Etta was described as a slim and beautiful young lady, wearing fancy English riding clothes and riding a Patagonian pony, as were her two male companions. On one occasion, Etta held the ponies while Butch and Longabaugh pulled the robbery, but twice she actually entered the bank posing as the On February 1, 1902 two gentlemen and a beautiful young lady approached Mrs. Taylor at her fashionable boarding house at 234 West Twelfth Street in New York City. They introduced themselves as Jim Ryan and Mr. & Mrs. Harry D. Place and inquired about a suite with two rooms the street below. Soldier Prince and steamed to Buenos Aires where they took rooms at the expensive Hotel Europa. At the London & Platte River Bank they deposited $30,000.00 - their profits of the Wagner, Tipton and Wilcox robberies - and with this backing, filed in March of that year an application at a government land office for four square leagues in Cholilo, Province of Chubut, District 16, which they were granted. Then, traveling by steamer and mule train, they finally reached these allotted holdings - some 350 miles inland - in May, 1902. There, they stocked the ranch with feeviral hundred head of the finest sheep, cattle and horses available and, for the first time in their entire outlaw career, gave their neighbors every reason to believe they were honest and citizens. Their ambition for a new start in life had finally been realized. In a letter to Mrs. Davis of Ashley, Utah, dated August 10, 1902, Cassidy wrote:- - I suppose you have thought long belore this that I had forgotten you (or was dead) but my dear friend, I am still alive. . .1 visited the best cities and best parts of the countrys of South A. till I got here. Cassidy went on to describe all the benefits the land had to offer, the great distances between one place and another, and the stable beef market which would be of benefit to them at market time. He was, in the opinion of this writer, there to stay. law-abidin- g But the Pinkertons would not easily give up the search. On February 14, 1903 Robert A. Pinkerton, in a letter to H.G. Burt (President of the Union Pacific Railroad Company) wrote:- - You will recall during your visit to New York, my speaking to you with reference to Harry Longabaugh, alias Harry Alonzo, alias The Sundance Kid, and George Parker, alias Butch Cassidy, being located in the Argentine Republic. . .The American Bankers Association have about concluded to have us make the effort to arrest and extradite these men for the robbery of the First National Bank of Nev., but they have asked us, if possible, to for any others interested in their punishment to arrange share the expenses. . .Knowing this Wild Bunch as you sucdo you will understand we could not guarantee the cessful capture of Imgabaugh and Cassidy, but we will agree to send two men to the Argentine Republic who will do everything in their power to bring this about and with the proper aid from the authorities, we believe we have a fair chance. . ." It therefore must be assumed that the Union Pacific Railroad Company granted the request for additional money set forth by the Pinkertons Rational Detective Agency, or that the American Bankers Association decided to go ahead on their own expense, for in the spring of 1905 Pinkerton operatives approached the police of Buenos Aires with photographs and descriptions and Etta Place, and of Cassidy, Longabaugh preparations were then made with the Argentine authorities for the trios immediate arrest. wealthy wife and lady friend of her two companions, and then assisted in emptying the cash drawers and the vaults. At the conclusion of each robbery, the trio would then ride off to seek sanctuary at one of several remote Jesuit Indian villages or in some monastery. Then, early in the summer of 1906, something happened which altered any future plans the outlaw trio may have contemplated. For during their holdup of the Compania National Store in Argentina, the manager had gone for his gun and Longabaugh had killed him. This was certainly not Cassidys style, but it happened, and Cassidy, thinking that Longabaugh had probably d for the protection of Etta, insisted that Etta be returned to the States. over-reacte- Whether Longabaugh for eggs; half- butter, remain anonymous), gallon milk own My 1974. cartons and tall bottles in- personal terviews over many years of research with numerous individuals who either knew or had personal knowledge of the outlaw trio, Cassidy, and Etta Longabaugh Place. In any event, Cassidy and Longabaugh drew straws to determine who would be her escort and Longabaugh was elected. There, as most historians are quick to point out, they would be gunned down in a spectacular burst ot gunfire which lasted all night. Of course this was really not the case and is definitely another story. The truth of the matter is that by 1912, Cassidy, ' Longabaugh and Etta Place had returned to the United States. Upon her recovery from surgery - after giving birth by cesarean - section to a premature baby girl - Etta Place was discharged from the hospital and she left Denver forever. Using her real name of Hazel Smith, she took her baby and returned to Castle Gate in search of the two children she had once deserted. Her search, however, proved fruitless, for her husband had taken the children from the state and had reinstated for them a new home, where the reckless past of their mother would be nothing more than a vivid memory. Etta turned to old friends and neighbors for information, but received none. And, for the first time, she was truly alone - in a world of heartfelt injustice. In Missouri tests, fertilized com used 15,400 less gallons of water to produce 61 more bushels of corn than unfertilized.
