Grain crops, for example, require less irrigation water than alfalfa or pasture. Grain crop irrigation can stop if after flowering necessary. Soil Conservation The Service advises that latest measurements of mountain snowpacks hold little hope for a normal amount of water for irrigation in most areas of Utah. Since most of Utahs water comes from mountain snowpacks, the deficiency of snow means there is little chance that farming this year will operate as usual. A Id be crazy to think, though, that oil will ever surpass coal in Carbon and Emery counties as the mainstay of J.S. Campbell, state 'petroleum their economies, the for Utah Geological and Mineral Survey geologist told the Tuesday. The Ferron well, owned by Fossil Petroleum Co. of Dallas, Tex., would be about the second major commercial well in the Kaibab formation. Campbell said, The Kaibab has had a lot of shows through the Central and Southcentral Utah, but only one in Garfield County turned out well. The Kaibabs track record is not good. a DAN i M. Darwin Quigley, exploration manager for Fossil Petroleum, refused to confirm or deny these rumors. He said only his firm is waiting for the concrete base for the pump jack to be poured before the wells output is determined. This seems to indicate, Campbell said, that the well will not flow through native pressures. So a pump is needed. I would not discount it as a possible discovery. 3ut whether it is a discovery will not be known until it produces, that is so they got something to sell. r g.'" Petroleum In31 reported 75 oil of March an newsletter formation, feet of oil between 7,100 and 7,350 feet. Thats real good, but the oil did not flow to the surface, although it seldom does. These rumors about the oil production are not unreasonable, Campbell said. Elmer Et Ellen Lorna Et Tigger The newsletter also showed 430 feet of heavy oil and gas cut mud between 7,645 and 7,745 feet. Fossil Fuels well has not been the only petroleum discovery in Ferron. Quigley said gas and oil discoveries got underway about 12 years ago. While the oil comes from the Kaibab limestone formation, Campbell said the gas tends to come from other formations such as the Ferron sandstone formation. The gas, he said, is very shallow. Nothing significant has been discovered, however. But this is typical for Utah as Campbell explains. Utah is just not the state that is widely explored for petroleum. There is a lot of potential for new discoveries. There are no deep wells except in Central Duchesne County, Southeastern San Juan County and Central Uintah County. It may be far out to say that there is any real potential in Carbon and Emery counties because it is subdued with the lack of deep drilling.
