Nazareth, a Prophet from Galilee, has been sentenced to die on a cross. Friday at the 3rd watch (9 a. m.) his cross will be raised on Golgatha, a hill outside thecity wall of Jerusalem. As usual he will be forced to carry his cross from the city along with two others who are sentenced as thieves. Pontius Pilate, Roman governor of Palestine, dramatically washed his hands of the affair yesterday before a' restless crowd. He attempted to release the prophet, but the crowd chose Barabbas vho had been bound for insurrection and murder. The governor had Jesus scourged before Easter Egg Custom custom that is sometimes observed among those of Eastern Orthodox faith is the presenting of red colored eggs to friends while giving Easter greetings. The egg is symbolic of the grave and life renewed by breaking out of it. The red symbolizes the blood of Christ redeeming the world. The egg is also a symbol of the Resurrection while being dormant it contains a' new life sealed within it. Earlier, the Nazarene was brought before the High Priest Caiaphas on the charge of blasphemy for claiming to be the Son The Story of the Crucifixion of Jesus is found in all four of the Gospels in the New Testament. Here is a portion of the description from Mark, beginning with the 15th verse of the 15th chapter. So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabas; and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the ; and they called together the whole battalion. And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and plaiting a crown of thorns they put it on him. And they began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews! And when he learned from the centurian that he was dead, he granted the body to Joseph. Mark 15:40-4- 7 RSV The Holy Bible. - Mary-Magdalen- e The Meaning of Easter Easter, for all Christendom, comes on Sunday, April 21, this year. Easter time we think of several ideas. First of all it marks a jhange of seasons. Nature declares the coming of spring and the vitality Of life again. Sometimes this is reflected in the flowers on miladys hat. But even flowers remind us of God and the change of seasons reflects His Pattern and orderliness in nature. Easter, for some, means spring house cleaning, painting-u- p and fixing up around the house or in the yard. We could go on to say that we need to realize the need for spring house cleanings in our lives. We can paint up and fix up by renewing our ideas of the goodness of life and such things as beauty, truth, honesty and love. Easter means a return of our thoughts to the spiritual aspects of life. At this time, many people begin to think 'of their churches and their scriptures. Easter means a return of our thoughts to God. Actually ever since its origin, Easter has turned mens attention to Jesus Christ. Lent, Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter are all centered in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. Men are attracted by his cross and his resurrection. From these come our ideas of the love of God and Jesus victory over sin and death. By his death on the cross, Christ makes possible the salvation of mankind and the personal saving of you and me. By his resurrection, he gives up hope for an eternal, immortal life. Easter means that Christs spirit is alive today, for the Christian declares He lives within my heart! ST ANTHONY CATHOLIC CHURCH Helper Edward Dowling, Pastor 7 p.m.. And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene and Mother the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, to that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the w'eek they went to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb? And loking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back; for it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe, and they were afraid. And he said to them, Do not be afraid; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He, has risen, he is not here: see the place where they laid him. But, go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you. And they went out and fled from the tomb; for trembling and astonishment had come upon them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. RSV. Devout Jews from all over Palestine and all over the Roman Empire are crowding into che Holy City for the Passover is to be Friday, the ' 14th of Nisan. Passover joyously recalls the greatest drama in Jewish tradit-tio- n the Israelites deliverance from bondage in Egypt and the great Exodus led by Moses. An element of sadness notes the fact that there have been other times of exile and bondage. Leavened food has been searched out and destroyed according to law, and matzot or unleavened bread has been prepared in the homes for use during the seven-da- y festival. Paschal lambs have been slain for the Seder, main meal of passover evening. Pass-ovsets of dishes and utensils are brought out by the housewives for the celebration. The oldest child and the father open the celebration by discussing the origin of the passover and the flight from Egyptian bondage. , 8. ble. Christian Churches Celebrate Easter Same Day This Year Triumphant Entry Into Jerusalem Jerusalem was the scene of a triumphant entry last Sunday. Long hailed as the Prophets City, Jerusalem was stirred by the entry of a prophet from Galilee. Jesus of Nazareth rode into the city on a donkey fulfilling the ancient prophecy of Zechariah. His disciples and others cut down branches from trees nearby to spread in his way. Others covered his path with their garments. A tumult of cries, Hosanna to the Son of David," er Attend Easter Jerusalem, 29 A.D. Thursday night, Jesus of Nazareth and his twelve disciples observed the pass-ovfeast in an Upper Room ail the home of Mark in Jerusalem. The event closely resembles the Kiddush. It consisted of a religious discussion followed by a simple meal of common bread and wine mixed with water, the cup being passed from one to another, and prayer offered. The Nazarene reportedly told his disciples that the bread and juice represented his body and blood about to be broken and shed for them. One report of the incident tells of Jesus girding himself with a towel and stopping down to wash the feet of his disciples. Following the kiddush, the disciples sang the Hallel and went with the prophet to the Garden of Gethsemane, where he spent the night in prayer. Those present for the occasion were 12 men from Gallilee : Simon Peter and his brother Andrew, James and his brother John, sons of Zebedee; Matthew, a tax collector; Thomas, Phillip, Bartholomew, James, the son of Alphaeus; Thad-deualso called Lebbaneus or Jude; Simon the Zealot from Can-aaand Judas of Kerioth. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus was arrested and led away for trial. "V oices raised in song . Story of the Crucifixion t There were also women looking on from afar, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger anfl of Joses, and Salome, who, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered to him; and also many other women who canffe up with him to Jerusalem. And when the evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took cour - Last Supper were raised by his fellows in the company coming from Galilee for the Passover in Jerusalem. The Teacher has 12 disciples chosen from Galilee who claim that they have found tlje Christ. They state that his life and teachings prove that he is the long awaited Messiah. Jesus ben Joseph had been working in a carpenters shop in Nazareth until his call to preach, according to the disciples. He was baptiz - ed in the Jordan by noted John the Baptist. He has spent over a preaching to thronging year crowds in the northern province. Galileans still recall a famous sermon delivered at Mount Hattin and others in the synagogues and on the plain of Esdraelon His teachings are mostly in the form of parables. The Prophet has a winsomeness and reverence for life and God that holds his The, Christian churches of the Eastern part of the world and the Christian churches of the West are celebrating Easter the same day this year, April 21, 1957. According to the Reverend George D. Dellas of the Price Greek Orthodox church, this has not hoppened before in the last four years, the two dates coming together every fourth year. So East and West are meeting, in spite of what Kipling wrote about East is East and West is West and never the twain shall meet. At the Church of Your Choice FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH James H Sollie, Pastor Baptist people do not adhere to the observance of special days as do those who are members of the Catholic, the Greek Orthodox, or the various Protestant groups. Baptists are not Protestants, never having had any connection whatsoever with the Roman Catholic system. This is no disparagement of that system but is merely a statement of fact. Since the celebration of Easter, Holy Week, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, etc., is nowhere taught to be observed in the New Testament, and these were not observed by the Apostles and the early Christian Churches, we feel ourselves under no compulsion to lend any special significance to those days. However, since Christ was raised from the dead at this season of the year, we feel that no harm is done (and perhaps much good can be done) by having special music and preaching special sermons on the subject of the resurrection of Christ. We shall do this, and we invite you to be with us on this Lords Day. Sunday School meets at 9:45, Morning Worship at 11:00, Baptist Training Union at 7:00; and Evening Worship at 8:00.
