Mealtime should be a special enjoyable time for the elderly Ron Nielsen, Administrator Richfield Care Center Mealtime should be a special, important event for all of us, where we enjoy relaxing social relationships. For the elderly, it is a very important event, or should be, the vital necessity forproper nutrition. Every effort should be undertaken by family members or other caregivers to make the dining environment as physically conducive as possible for positive dining, as well as to encourage the social atmosphere of the dining area. An effort to allow individuals to make a choice of seating arrangements is important In a family group at home, where an elderly father or mother is living with you, this can make a big difference in their dining experience. Of course, a choice of food dishes to try to meet likes and dislikes make a difference in food intake, as well. Be sure that there is stimulating, compatible, and peaceful conversation and socialization during meals. This type of pleasant atmosphere usually results in an individual enjoying and consuming more of the food which is available to them, and this is a vital concern in many elderly who have a poor appetite. We have discussed the ideal )) wastewater treatment facility. Contractors may bid on either one or both of the contract bid schedules. This contract is a Federal Aid Project. Can you see how this can be an exciting, rewarding dining experience? Remember also that a consistent experience, a regular food intake regimen is important to maintain a goodappetite. Thisis wherealotof our elderly friends get into trouble. So be a friend, help your friend or loved one have enjoyable and valuable mealtime experiences. DWR sets checkpoints during hunts During October and November, game and upland game hunters can expect to encounter periodical checkpoints being run by the Division of Wildlife Resources biologists and conservation officers. These check points allow the Division to collect valuable information concerning wildlife populations and trends. They help in monitoring the taking and possession of wildlife, as well as allowing officers to monitor the required licenses, permits, tags, certificates of registration, firearms, devices, and other apparatus required for hunting. big Educators give tips to help your child Todays educators say that parents play a most important pan in their childs education. Following are some recommendations from teachers to help you with this task. Find out what is taught in the classroom. What books are used? What topics are covered. How are grade determined? What are the classroom and school policies? Attend parent back to school nights, and have conferences with your childs teachers. Ask the teacher how you can help your child at home with school work. Make a school launch pad at home. Chose a place where you and your child will always know to look for the lunch boxlunch money, school notices and announcements and messages. Whether its the top of the TV or the dining room table, this can become your vital communication center. Read notices and papers left on the launchpad. Tell the teacher how to reach you and when its best to call. Find out when you can talk to the teacher. Respond to a teachers note or phone call as soon as possible after getting the message. The Utah Safety Council reminds you its a good time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors - or to test them and see that they are working properly. By getting into the habit of changing your batteries each year at this time you can rest easier knowing that you and your family will have a better chance of surviving a home fire should it occur. ;X't"v .EmMAr , V v It is a myth that you can smell smoke and wake up on your own. Fires produce toxic gases, some of which you cant smell and which often kill people long before the fire reaches them. In 1992, there were 9 people killed in Utah fires, none of whom had working smoke detectors in their homes. Chi the other hand, everyone else involved in home fires in Utah last year survived -because they did have smoke detectors to warn them. This setting is also enjoyed in theCare Center orresiden-ti- al group home, but it is easy to conclude that this experience is missing for those of our elderly loved ones and friends who are living alone. For the dining experience to be a good one, and for proper food intake for those living alone, each family friend or neighbor should be sensitive and alert and make the effort to help.
