Show vm vyrnum 8 TheSalinaSun Wednesday, June.., 23, 1993 School Board has busy meeting nshs Class NSHS Class of 1953 of 1988 sets 53 year reunion Actions taken by the Sevier board of education at its June meeting included appointing Supt. Brent Thome to a two-yeterm, approving hiring and transferring of employees, recognition of retiring employees, a report on teacher development time in Richfield, and two hours of patron dialogue on the recent transfer of a principal. According to Utah law, new superintendents are hired for one year, and after that, they are reappointed for two year contracts. Supt. Thome came to Sevier from North Sanpete in June of 1992. Personnel transfers include English teacher Marilyn Hawley from South Sevier Middle to Red Hills Middle, replacing Tamra Nilsson; music teachers Bruce Wurstcn and Barry Erickson, each a half day at RHS and Red Hills Middle; Home making teacher Mary Jo Judd, full ume to SSHS; music teacher Joe Staples full time to SSHS; Carol Ann Vcatcr to North Sevier Middle, replacing Renae Seegmiller, who resigned; Gail Albrecht from RHS ar Youth Dance to Red Hills Middle. Nine employees retired and were recognized for their years of service to the district Royce Johnson, Bert Madsen, Larry Coombs, Russ Hawks, and LelandTecpIcs. Classified employees retiring include James Bailey, Karmen Buchanan, Oma Santos and Devon Shaw. Pahvant School principal Ray Hunt told the board that the trial period of staff development time in Richfield schools had turned out well, and there had been no complaints from parents. We were able to do some tcmfic things for our school, he added. Reporting for RHS, assistant principal Teresa Robinson said, You cant service an airplane in mid-ai- r, and if education can be compared to the flight of an airplane, teachers need some time on the ground. She assured the board that teacher development time was fruitful for research and soul searching by the high school staff. A very tight budget of slightly less than $18 million, which includes a one mil tax increase was approved for the 1993-9- 4 year. The $80,000 officials expect to generate through the tax is needed to compensate for the increase in fee waivers, and transportation costs due to realignment of high school athletic leagues. A public hearing will be held in August and the truth in taxation process will be entered. About 60 concerned patrons from the South Sevier area, led by booster club president Debbie Barney, told the board they were opposed to the transfer of principal Jerry Hawley from SSHS to a teaching position at Richfield High. Board president Jerold Johnson said that due to legal constrain ts, and the confidential nature of personnel matters, the board was unable to respond directly to statements made. There are things (about this issue) you dont understand, the board president told the crowd. He added that the boards vote on the transfer was a unanimous action that had been considered for several months, and that Dr. Hawley had been counseled throughout the process. Following the discussion with patrons, the board spent more than an hour discussing the points presented and considered the request to rescind the transfer. However no motion to rescind was made, and the transfer will stand. set July 2 Leeon Christensen A Youth Dance will be held Friday, July 2, beginning at 8 p.m. at die Salina Stake Center Parking Lot.
