Wanted: place to house 27 wives; 56 children Pioneer Flashbacks Quig Nielson One of Brigham Youngs architectural triumphs was the Lion House which was built in 1856 in Salt Lake City. This unusual and distinctive building may well have been the firstapartmenthouse built in Utah. Brigham Young had 27 wives and 56 children and needed a place to house them. The White House on the Hill and the Beehive House were filled. So the Lion House was planned in which about 1 2 families could live. An impressive three story, thick walled structure, built of adobe, the Lion House was designed by Young with Truman O. Angell as architect. Clarissa YoungSpenccr, Youngs daughter, points out that since her father had learned the carpentry trade as a young man the results of his knowledge are' evidence in such fine features..as the easy stair treads, and graceful Crop Affa-lon- great grandchildren. with the Mellors. The gabled building had 25 apartments or rooms and was, as another daughter, Susa Young Gates, wrote, a loved home of as healthy and happy family of mothers and children as ever dwelt beneath a roof. On this I speak with knowledge in this intimate revelation of Brigham Youngs home life, for I was the first child bom under its unique roof. The Lion House was so named because of the lion on the front portico over the entrance. It was carved by William Ward, an English artists, who had made the stone baptismal font resting on the backs of 12 oxen in the Nauvoo Temple. It is thought that the Lion of the Tribe of Judah was Brigham Youngs inspiration for the Lion House Statue. The Lions House is now used to host receptions, lunches, and diners. Lunch is served cafeteria style, five days each week. pared with 70 72 average. Claudette Peterson. Bonnie and Randy Andreason have had Bonnies mother visiting.
