Show i we hear these terms often - what do they really mean? 'OBE', 'ODDM', Often parents hear teachers using the terms Outcome based education, or ODDM, or OBE, and wonder what they are talking about Outcome Based Education (OBE) is a concept which includes all excellent educational practices. Such practices as mastery learning, teaching for mastery, learning styles, essential elements of instruction, etc. OBE can be boiled down to four basic areas: 1. Understanding the subject matter we teach; 2. Understanding the child; 3. Understanding how children learn; 4. Understanding the teaching process. Sometimes we see a system where both the teachers and students are performing well - where students arc learning what the teachers are trying to teach them. At other times we a system where teachers are working hard, but students do not seem to learn. Sometime the common philosophy of the student in this system seems to be If we sit long enough, we will Our schools in get a diploma. many cases are not functioning well. This represents a tremendous waste of human and financial resources, according to Dr. Robert H. Moss. EduUnder the Outcome-base- d cation system, emphasis is to create a school where students and teachers see that there is payoff for both of them if they work harder. Psychologically, we know that many students dont work hard at learning because there is not enough immediate payoff either in or out of school, Moss said. It becomes impossible to motivate a student who does not believe the work is satisfying or that he will have a reward. William Glas- - scr, a psychologist who has written much about schools, has produced a book called Control Theory. In the book he discusses the schools filling four basic needs for every student: Belonging Power Freedom Fun Dr. Glasser says that if schools dont satisfy these needs, they will fail - and so will their students. He says, A good school could be defined as a place where almost all students believe that if they do some work, they will be able to satisfy their needs enough so that it makes sense to keep working. He sees that discipline is not a problem in classes where all students can gain immediate satisfaction. He says that what is going on inside the student, rather than any outside situation, is the cause of all behavior both the good behavior - and the bad. Under the Outcome-Base- d Education, teachers attempt to restructure their classes so that they are more salifying to the students and to themselves. The learning results desired, are clearly spelled out to the students. They know just what they have to do. Students must master 80 to 90 of the material given before going on to another subject If they dont learn it, there is opportunity to be retaught - by another teacher, with opportunity to relearn and be retested. Outcome-Base- d Education is here to stay. Teachers can do a much better job of teaching students using the method. Moss noted. OBE offers students the opportunity for a better education, mo.; articulated with the realities of life. The goal of OBE is that all students will learn well what the school wants them to learn, Moss - Freshman: Lisa Brown Senior: Monica Pickett Junior: Warren Brown Sophomore: Heidi Rosquist Students of the Month of North Sevier High Lisa Brown is a Freshman at North Sevier High.
