The following stories indicate that there are still good people everywhere, who care about their fellowman enough to risk their lives to save them. For more information call Analee Creer NIS: John Roach , of T ooele, was his ride toTooeles Army for waiting Depot, where he works as a security guard. His ride was more than ten minutes late. As John waited, acar slowed down, signaling to make a left turn. Three women in the vehicle were heading to their local Stake Center for a rehearsal of The Messiah. Suddenly, down the road streaked a pickup truck which hit the turning vehicle at full speed. It was later found that the driver of the truck had apparently fallen asleep at the wheel. The impact was so great that the hit vehicle began to bum, its gas tank ruptured. John immediately ran to the vehicle. My mind went into hyper-driv- e, he said. A quick prayer ran through his mind, and he later said he felt impressions coming into his mind telling him just what to do. It was a spiritual communication , he said, I cant explain it any better. Four times he tried pulling the door open on the passenger side of the vehicle. The fifth time the door was opened. It was later found that the door had been jammed in one inch past the frame. No one knew how it was opened. Roach felt the gas cap fly Rifle shells under the face. his by seat began exploding, and some firecrackers left in the trunk from last years holiday began popping. He kept working until he in getting all three succeeded finally women out The third woman to be rescued had hit the steering wheel, causing cardiac arrest, he thought she might be already dead, but as he pulled her from the car - the car It went off like a cole-ma- n exploded! lantern, Roach said. . After the injured had been sent on their way to the hospital. Roach continued on to work. No one even knew his name. Later investigation identified Roach as the hero, and one of the rescued women reported the event to the Carnegie Hero Fund. For his efforts, he later received a certificate and check for $2,500, plus a medal - one of only 1 7 Americans to be recognized as real -true to life heroes this year. The women reporting his heroism did so, she says, because he has a daughter who was attacked by a man with knife in Los Angeles and even though she was screaming for help, no one came to her assistance. Roach and the three women are all active in their incident of the church - and feel that it was an act of God that they escaped the inferno. We need heros, said one of the rescued women. We need to know there are people wiling to risk their life to save someone else. Supt. Ell Sorensen said tat the decision was made because of the seriousness of the outbreak and the short time remaining in the school year. He said that there are about 40 to 60 students who could fall into the category that would allow them to quit school early.
