In addi tion, their Coach, Jill Porter, was named Womens Coach of the Year in Track! The girls did it for themselves and their school, of course, but they put in the extra effort for Coach Jill Porter, who was confined to the hospital, and could not attend the meet. The girls on the team couldnt resist it - and when they returned home from state competition in first place, they piled aboard a fire engine and headed for the Coachs home in Redmond, with the siren roaring at full blast Coach Porter said she was very proud of the girls and their achievements, and it was an emotional time for the girls and their coach as they celebrated the win. When the soldier returned to their grim task the following morning, Flanders Field was said to have been covered with thousands of bright red poppies, which had sprung up overnight The flowers appeared to the soldiers to be a tribute and memorial to the men who had given their lives in the battle. The poppies distributed by the Auxiliary are replicas of the Flanders Field poppy, and are the exact color. They are made by veterans in hospitals, rest homes and care centers. The veteran is paid for making the poppies, and it is a way for him to make a little spending money. Forty percent of the contributions received will be returned to the state for the veterans, and sixty percent is kept by the local unit for use by local veterans or his children.
