Only 96 State Farmer candidates are awarded this high honor each year. This makes a count of 24 State Farmers in the past 7 years at North Seviei High. The State Farmer Candidates are judged on their Super Two members of the North Sevier FFAChapterwillbe awarded the State Farmer Degree at the State FFA Convention in Logan. Shari Hansen and Jenwill receive the nifer Crane Highest degree that the State FFA vised Occupational Experience Projects; Record books; Parliamentary Procedures; Public speaking; Demonstration skills; Participation in Chapter, area, state and national affairs; overall grade point average; and awards in FFA and other organizations. Mechanics class learns many skills This year the Ag Mechanics Department as accomplished a lot Sixth period the younger group meets, consisting of So- phomores and Juniors. They have been working on individual Projects such as horse feeders and other small projects using welding skills. The Fifth period class is all Seniors. This year they have learned various welding and building skills. They have just recently completed a Tuff Shed for Mr. Chartier. They are now starting on their own individual projects using metal working skills, however their projects must be Ag related. As an FFA officer I feel that the students have learned a lot in the Mechanics Classes this year. They have learned skills that they will always be able to use and have fun doing it as well. Mark Crane, NSHS Freshman shows the trophy he won at Area FFA competition recently. He won the award for his efforts in FFA Creed Speaking. Mark will now go on to final state competition to be held at Brigham Young University, April 6, 7, and 8. Modern Agriculture is more than plowing that cornfield The image of the FFA has been a topic of concern and has provoked a heated debate. If there is an FFA image problem it has to do with perceptions of agriculture and farming, said Larry Case, national FFA advisor. Many parents dont see FFA as a place for their kids be cause they dont want their kids to grow up to be farmers. They see agriculture as a losing profession. How can that be tree? People have to eat - and there are more people in this country than ever before - that means there has to be someone to grow their food. Agriculture is not just farming. There are many other jobs such as soil conservationist, nursery manager, forester, genetics scientist, rancher, meat cutter, farm equipment mechanic, just to name a few. Even if a person is not interested in a job in agriculture at all the FFA still has something to offer them. FFA helps students develop leadership, cooperation and citizenship along with many other useful skills such as public speaking, parliamentary procedure and extemporaneous speaking. ture for their food.
