Show 9 Brigham City, Utah Thursday, December 8, 1977 BOX ELDER JOURNAL, (Slity FOSuICS At bowling benefit Dec. 17 in tashoCuall pocCcd Gene Fullmer, Marv Jenson will bowl here Former world middleweight boxing champion Gene Fullmer of West Jordan will head a celebrity field of bowlers at Max Kosofs bowling benefit Dec. 17 at the Brigham Bowl. Fullmer, his manager Marv Jenson, Salt Lake Tribune Sports Editor John Mooney and Utahs only touring bowling professional Steve Buell, will be on hand during the days activities. All are long-tim- e friends of Kosof who was prominent in the Utah sports scene for many years. Fullmer, himself a regular bowler since giving up boxing in 1963, will bowl along side Kosof for several games. The champion will be at the benefit with Jenson and Mooney from 11 a.m. to about 3 p.m. Buell, owner of the Orchard Pro-ABowl in North Salt Lake, will bowl with Kosof from about 6 p.m. until Kosof reaches his 70 games. Of course, the benefit of pin party is for blind and needy children. All proceeds collected will be turned over to the local Division of Family Services for distribution in the form of coats, shoes and warm clothing for needy children. In addition, the local DeMolay members are selling $1 off tickets on the bowling with the purchasers also getting a free chance on several prizes, including a CB radio, a handmade quilt donated by Mr. and Mrs. Duke Pritchard of Perry. A beautiful houseplant from Glen Casper-son- s Garden Center and other prizes. Bowling will cost $2 per game this year with all proceeds going to charity. Kosof in return for the publics support invites all to his birthday party afterwards. And those beating him receive a free series of bowling at the Brigham Bowl. Maxie, since his 65th birthday, has bowled a line for each year of his life as a means of raising money to aid less fortunate. Other members of the team 500-yar- are Blake Bradford (soph), David Bowman (fresh), David Smith (soph), Rodney Scothern 76-5- Pierce (15) and Gary Allred (11) were high scorers for Packer. For the Bank, Doug Rollins (22) Gary Rohmer (10), Mike Sutton (14), Ken Simkins (12)- , and Reese Nielsen (10) were tops in scoring. Dr. Pepper bottled the Cham9 in a pion Homes team game which was difficult to get going for both sides. Brent Nielson was high point man for Champion Homes even though he played with injuries. Phil Adams pumped in 19 points and Dan Jeppsen popped 13 in for Dr. Pepper. Games for Dec. 12 : 6 p.m., BowMart vs. Dr. Pepper; 7:20, Box Elder County Bank vs. Gardner Dairy; 8:40, Jays vs. Champion Homes. Mooney, who has worked for the Tribune since the early 1940s, covered Fullmers career as the newspapers correspondent. Kosof was a sponsor and promoter for Fullmer from 1952 until Fullmer retired in 1963. Kosof was able to travel with Fullmers entourage to over 40 fights. Fullmer and Kosof, who had some 76 amateur bouts as a welterweight, clowned around a bit. They squared off and traded jabs and jibes, with more of the latter thrown than the former. "Anything Maxies wants me to help him with, Im as close as the telephone," Fullmer told the Journal. Maxie has been a friend for many years and well be very happy to help him with this event. Jenson, now deputy director of the Utah Park and Recreation department, echoed sentiments and related incident after incident involving the local man. Mooney recalled bowling In one of World Endurance clasKosofs sics as well as a few other times the two were together covering a Fullmer fight. Buell worked for Kosof when he was 17 and began bowling under Kosofs watchful eye.. He turned professional and went on the Professional Bowlers association tour, coming back to Utah a few years ago to bowl. He purchase the Orchard Pro-Astill shoots three or four PBA tournaments a year. Buell is known to local bowlers, too, conducting a clinic at the local lanes using instant replay from a video tape machine to help bowlers improve techniques.
