BOX ELDER JOURNAL, Bears test Dart dynamo Brigham City, Utah Thursday, September 29, 1977 Bs wnnfl cansisftsimcy, Crs The fat goes into the fire again Friday at Region Four gladiators take the turf in the third round of football wars. Spotlight will be on Davis and Ben Lomond as the league leaders attempt to keep their records without blemish. Davis hosts limping Bear River and Ben Lomond and Ogden square off in a traditional fisticuff. In other games, South is at Logan and Box Elder is at Woods Cross. Of equal importance will be clash as the the Bees, with a win, can continue to claim at least a part of third which means a playoff place at seasons end and maintain pressure on the leaders. Only Davis at first glance appears to be able to look ahead as the Bears are hurting offensively without junior quarterback Blake Sandall at the helm. Logan gets the favorite nod over South and Box Elder is an odds on choice to win its second league test. Ogden has the better offense and should mix up the standings even more. 0 ts DeVon Breitenbeker displays guage shotguns he won at last week's Ducks Unlimited fund raising banquet. The contest is set for a 4 p.m starting time Friday afternoon. The Wildcats are still in search of their first Region Four victory. And the Bees are hoping to rebound from a defeat at the hands of Davis last week. It will be a case of Wood Cross fine defense matching might with what Coach Tot Workman hopes will be an improved ground game. Were working on our interior line play and punts this week, the Bee ball boss said Tuesday. And looking to Fridays game, he added, We have to get consistent blocking and defense to win. Every play has got to have consistency. He said Woods Cross, in varsity play for the first time this year and lacking any seniors, 22-1- 4 13-- 19-1- Scoring for Velasquez was Jake Keanaina with a 35 yard run. Pat was a pass from Jake to Larry Velasquez. For the second score Ron Thompson picked up a Clark pass and ran over for another six points. First Federal Savings tried to If this years waterfowl opener Saturday isnt as good as last years, it wont be due to a lack of ducks. Reports from both state and federal wildlife biologists indicate there is a goodly number of ducks in the area, including Box Elder county. Water conditions are about at normal at the Bear River Migratory bird refuge, while Salt Creek and Public Shooting Grounds marshes also have good water supplies. The opener is Saturday at noon. Jack Renzel, Northern ion director for the Utah RegDivi- sion of Wildlife Resources, said good populations are existing at Salt Creek, Public and Harold Crane waterfowl management areas. Looks Pretty Good The hunt looks pretty good, he said, if hunters will cooper- ate and not start shooting until the noon opening time. If hunters will hold off until noon it should be a good hunt. He said hunters shooting early will put the ducks up high and ruin the hunt for everyone. The majority of ducks on the state areas include pintail, cinnamon and green winged teal, widgeon, some mallards and redheads. A few ruddy ducks will be in evidence. He advised hunters to take care of redheads and canvas-back- s since only two of each species or in aggregate may be taken. He said geese wont be legal to Oct. 8 and swan permits have been mailed to lucky hunters. Legal waterfowl hours a victory. Scoring for FFS&LL were Jared Gunther with a pass from Scott Smith for six points. Brent Hollingsworth tossed a 30 yarder to Scott Smith to end scoring for First Federal. The new water levels cover up a lot of feed but the ducks have only moved off the refuge to other areas, either state or private, he added. The unit also includes Mike Pulsipher (quarterback) and Joel Huff (slot back), Coach Ron Wolff said. The defensive team had trouble controlling Bear Rivers sweeps and misdirection plays. Webb was exceptionally tough against Ben Lomond and was one of the bright spots. Passing, however, went down to the tune of four for 22 against the Scotties, said the coach. If we run the ball, well be more effective than that, the coach added. Bear River will rely on its tough defense, which except for four plays, got a grade A rating from the coach. And Ben Lomond, except for two BR gifts near the BR goal line, kept the scots at bay quite well. How to stop the Darts? They do the same things they've done for 15 years. They run traps, reverses . . .basically three offensive plays, said Jacobsen. To stop them? Basic, rugged, very tough defense. The Bears are capable of that type of football, said the coach, but to keep up with a potent team like Davis, your offense must also control the ball.
