Show t t BOX ELDER JOURNAL, Brigham City, Utah Thursday, March 3, 1977 Activities keep FFA members busy at Box Elder High school classes competed against each other. They were judged on the importance of the items under debate, amount of reasonable debate, proper use of motions and requests and time involved. The winning team consisted of Bill Orme, chairman; Mike Woodward, Scott Nelson, James Bott and Lane Sparks. The winning team will also compete in an area contest. The chapter is hoping to send some contestants to the National FFA convention in Kansas City next year. How high a price can the average Box Elder county family prudently pay for a new home these days? Based upon its earning capacity, how big a load may it take on in the form of degree monthly carrying charges without getting overburdened? The questions are pertinent at this time because they confront a large number of families, locally and elsewhere, who are in the market for new homes. Many of them g for a long time have been but have been unable to find suitable ones within their means. However, because incomes in the area have been going up and are at a higher level than ever, most local families are now in a position to pay more for their housing than they were able to in former by Mike Woodward MEMBERS OF the chapter's winning parlimentary procedures team are, from left, Scott Nelson, Mike Woodward, James Baugh, John Baugh and Bill Orme. Absent was Lane Sparks. The American Farmer is perhaps the highest honor that can come from the FFA. Each state is entitled to one American Farmer for each 1,000 members. To receive this degree the boy must have an outstanding supervised farming program from which he must have earned or invested $1,000. He must also have been out of high school for at least one year and have demonstrated outstanding leadership in FFA activities. The American Farmer applicant from the Box Elder chapter is Roger Woodward. In his activities in the FFA he has many projects such as sheep, beef, wheat and alfalfa. He is out of high school attending Dixie college, where he is working on his application. As for the average family in Box Elder county, it is better able to cope with this price, however, than are families in many other communities. The $50,500 price represents approximately 3.9 times the annual net income per household locally. However, Box Elder County Assessor Clifton G.M. Kerr said the average cost of a new home locally is not so high. He estimated the figure at about $37,500. While this still poses a stiff challenge for many prospective home buyers, it seems to offer more hope than that generated by the national average figure. In some areas, no less than 10 times annual earnings would be necessary. Keeping pace with the rising cost of new homes is the cost of used ones. The average selling price nationally, as of September, was $43,300. American Farmer Develop speakers by Doug Child The Bo Elder FFA chapter in Brigham City, Box Elder High school, is actively engaged in a program to develop good speakers and active legislators. The chapter advisers, Dee Forrest, Dee Hortin and Norwood Hyer, are training their students in public speaking and parliamentary procedure. They have held a chapter public speaking contest in which the contestants were top speakers in their school hour and classes. These contestants spoke before judges who scored them according to the of interest the speaker held, his knowledge on the subject, his ability to present it and the time involved. John Baugh, son of Mr. and Mrs. Max Baugh of Harper Ward, won the chapter contest. The top three speakers in the chapter are going to compete again at KLO radio on March 4 in which the winner there will go up against winners from other chapters in an area contest the next day. Other chapters or schools in the area contest will include Bear River, Sky View, Weber, and Roy. The winners there will go to the state public speaking contest on March 29 at Salt Lake City. Another program in the chapter intended to train students in expressing ideas is the parlimentary procedure contest which was held where five members in a team from each hour of the advisers How tough is it l ElilC'jl Floatation Sleep System which offers the benefits! you've dreamed All of . . .
