Show BOX ELDER JOURNAL, Brigham City, Utah Thursday, January 13, 1977 6 Fourth - ranked Eagles gun down Grantsville Theres only a handful of unbeaten basketball teams in Utah this season and Brigham City happens to be home of one of them Intermountains Eagles. And the Eagles kept that-strin- unbroken Tuesday night in a sometimes easy, somewin over the times difficult Grantsville Cow76-6- 9 fifth-ranke- d boys. And the Eagles, themselves ranked just this week for the first time since leaving Region One, showed they can win in the clutch (again) to gain in Region Nine with a 0 record. They didnt play the smooth ball they have in past games, but the Eagle defense came through time and again and Nelson Standish and Terrance Covers-u- p provided offense in the clutch to run their overall mark to 10-- shares the lead. The polls came out Tuesday afternoon and revealed the Eagles had replaced Wasatch, loser to Intermountain week, as the fourth-ranke- last club d It was a natural match for the fourth and fifth rated teams and it turned into a real dogfight. Coach Gary Rohmer read good news and bad news in the statistics post game. They outrebounded us 48 to 34. We should have lost because he deof that right there, clared. But on the positive side, the Eagles forced 25 turnovers and committed only 13 in return. And 15 assists were recorded by Intermountain to just three by the Cowboys. in the Team Quickness Rohmer felt team quickness was the major factor. The k Eagles were able to hit the bucket when they needed it and quick hands had the Cowboys off balance most of the night. fast-brea- Other Games in Grantsville fell to overall. In other league and games, Morgan, the Eagle opponent here Friday night, and Lehi dumped Union Lehi thumped Wasatch 4 72-6- 1 63-5- Standish and Covers-u- p teamed for 59 points in the game. Standish hit a streak of eight points in the fourth period to bring Intermountain in front at the start of after trailing the period. Standish canned a bucket, then got both sides of a one and one when fouled after the shot. He drilled a jumper shortly after and added two more pitches as the Eagles went ahead for good, In all, he had 15 fourth quarter points and Covers-up hit two clutch drives. Terrance Reed and Jasper Half both scored in the frame when it was crucial. The game opened with the Eagles running out to a lead at the end of the first period and moving ahead by 11 at half. Grantsville would claw within four only to have Standish or Covers-u- p can a quick shot and open up the margin. Rohmer reflected postgame that despite the raggedness, the team showed poise in coming back after losing the lead. Conditioning and hustle showed there. And I think we came back to our patterned offense which we had gotten out of. Youve got to credit the entire team for a good job Jasper Half, Terrance Reed, Myron Oldbull, Covers-uand Standish and Jon and Locklear. But Covers-u- p Standish won it for us when it was tight, said Rohmer. Avoid Letdown Rohmer cautioned his players at intermission to avoid a recurring third quarter letdown, and was disturbed to see it happen. Grantsville outscored Inin that period termountain to forge a lead. Rick Harrison, a good looking sophomore, did most the damage inside against the Eagle big men. The rugged fracas came close to a brawl a time or two as Admitting the Eagles were a little flat, Rohmer said he figures the Eagles will break out of it Friday when the Trojans come to town. Morgan was the team in state second place last year and the Eagles traditionally play well against them. Along with 35 for Standish and 24 for Covers-up- , Oldbull hit eight, Reed five and Half four for the Eagles.
