Show Dear Rivor hosts 2 p.m. lilt M EfiQs You can throw all that brotherly love stuff out the window for a couple of hours Friday. Yes, it's the long awaited match up between Bill and Mike Jacobsen, a first year mentor versus his veteran brother in the class high school football quarterfinals. It also features Bear Rivers Bears against the top ranked club in Utah, the Springville Red Devils. Bill, as local fans know, came to Bear River after two years as assistant to brother Mike and has turned the Bears around. Virtually unknown south of Ogden, the Bears earned the right to host the quarterfinal whitewash of game with a Bingham Tuesday at Davis High school. Rawlinson's run to the six, but a holding call and interception at the goal line stopped that. Bingham moved to the Bear kickoff, but stalled when a fourth down play left them an inch short. Another drive in the quarter was stifled at the BR-- 7 after the Miners marched from their 35. That was their last gasp. 3-- 19-- 0 . Unhappy Moments Coach Jacobsen was pretty much pleased with the overall play of his club, but had some unhappy moments when two sure scoring drives were stopped by penalties. We werent completely ready for Bingham. We only had a day to prepare for them but overall I was happy with the way we played, he commented, adding that the game was far from their best this year. Our offensive line didn't block as well as it should but our defense was super, especially when it had to be, he said. That defense turned aside the only three bona fide Miner scoring threats and kept them bottled up through most of the game. Several Bears had outstanding games, headed by Mr. Everythng Chris Webb. Webb neared 200 yards offense in the game, rushing for IS6 yards, scored three touchdowns, caught three passes (Two for scores) and anchored the middle of the Bear defense at linebacker. after taking the opening 34 IMfey Cc3fg Last Drive Webb got the Bears going on their last TD drive, a when he slashed off the right side and churned to the Bingham 26 before being caught from behind. Kidmand and Webb moved the ball to the seven where Williams hooked up with Webb again for the tally. The pass for two failed. Speaking of performances, Jacobsen said sophomore Bryan Christensen intimidated the Miners at his defensive tackle slot and had the best game of his career. Lupe Barrera, Shane Cornwall and Roger Norr also had outstanding games, as did Hess, Rawlinson, Curt Weese, Daren and Kerr,. And about Springville, Jacobsen said the Red Devils are a good football team, as their record and No. 1 ranking indicate. They have a super quarterback and a good fullback. Up front, they have one side thats super and one side thats weak. I think offensively we can do some things that can hurt their defense," he said. Thats 733-347- 1 OX ILDM ACTION tPOtTSN Have a Chance But despite that, he still feels the Bears have a chance to upset the Red Devils. We can win if we do things we know we can do. Jacobsen has some defensive changes to institute this week and will make several offensive changes. We can throw the ball against them. Its a matter of containing their quarterback and fullback. So far, no ones done that against them. Against Payson they hurt themselves, commented Jacobsen. The coach has one advantage. Hes coached all the Springville players and has an idea where he can find a weakness. Jacobsen said he hoped he could have played Springville in the semifinals but the luck of the draw places both coaches in a do or die situation. He noted that by way of comparision, Springville stop2 (the ped Spanish Fork and Bears beat the Dons Payson edged Red Devils while they fell to Bear River in the season opener. Our kids are really excited. My brother has come up and talked to them and they really want to show him they can play football, Jacobsen said.
