Special license agents also have archery deer permits. Archery elk permits ware sold through August 6 -- only. r Permits Cost The cost of archery deer permits is $1 for both residents and nonresidents. Muzsleloader permits will be $9 for residents and S7 for nonresidents. Most regulations pertaining to regular season hunting apply to the special hunts. One notable exception is the suspension of "hunter orange" clothing requirements for the primitive weapons seasons. Participants in the primitive weapons hunts should exercise special caution in .identifying their targets. They should also obtain a copy of the 1976 hunting regulations and study them in detail before going afield. Lee Robertson, Utah Division bf Wildlife Resources hunter safety coordinator, offered pome logical and interesting safety tips and pointers that pay make your hunting trip successful. f "Even though some archers and muzzleloaders will be hunting at the tame time inthe same wb, tbs limited range effiwir weapons will help reduce the possibilities of hunters being mistaken for deer. "But hunters still need to exercise extreme caution in identifying any. moving object before aiming or pointing their weapons," Roberbmn said. ' Extend Caro i "This care should be extended, especially during the early morning and late evening hours when tranters will be stalking game in areas filled with dark shadows. c , "Both the arrow and the lead ball used in the primitive weapons hunts travel at speeds Which allow a significant degree ' of ricochet. Early hunters should keep this in mind and be aware of the background, Robertson continued. ' The hunter safety expert reiterated an earlier recommendation by saying that these special hunts require special skill levels If hunters are to be successful. Muzzleloaders and archers must get ready early by putting their equipment in proper operating condition. t Practice ik ! Probably the most necessary preparation is practice. Sharpening skills on the range can mean the difference between a safe and successful hunt and a .field accident and discouragement, Robertson added. each sho It is best not to push wounded animal while the adrenalin is flowing. If a blood trail is found, wait for 90 minutes, then pursue the trail.. ! If you lose the blood trail, spot : a stick at the last blood spot and ; sight over the stick from down the blood trail. The direction will allow you to track the animal further in the probable . direction it took. If trail Is lost, spot a stick at . the last blood spot and work out in widening circles to relocate ; the trail. - ' The expected warm weather creates the need for added precaution In caring for the venison once it is killed. RemeveSkln Removing the skin and hair as soon as possible is the best method of cooling down the carcass. Hang the animal if possible and open the rib cage to allow air circulation to cool from the inside. use several buckets of cool water to wash down the animal and help initiate a glaze. Utahs 1976 primitive weapons seasons, including both muzsleloader and archery hunts, will open the year's big game hunting activities on Saturday. .. The special hunts call for special planning and consideration prior to and during the time spent in the field. ,r Muzsleloader hunting is restricted to four areas: the Raft .River part of Bos Elder county, the Uinta primitive area and North and South Boulder Mountains. Archery deer hunting is open statewide, and elk archery hunting is legal in all open bull elk areas. Special permits for both black powder and archery deer hunts may be purchased at all Division of Wildlife Resources offices through the September 6 club. If a muzzleloader gets off four shots in one day, he has had a good day of hunting. Do not use a "spit patch for hunting. It can cause rust rings in the rifle's barrel. Use a greast patch with a good quality Friday through Sunday Power boat races on tap grease. Always start and end the day of hunting with a fresh "load. Grease patches can . at Willard eventually soak into the powder and cause a "sour .load. In the morning before loading up, pop two or three, caps with a little powder to remove condensation. Clean rifle before going afield. Never pour powder directly from flask or powder horn into barrel after firing. A hot spark could ignite the whole container. To avoid the poeslbility, pour into a measure Kwder load.powder Make certain ball is seated with directly on the powder no air space. You can be sure it is seated correctly by marking the proper distance on the ramrod and checking to see that the mark and the end of the barrel correspond.
