According to local conservation officer John Fricke, the fish were attacked by a species of while fish were weakened from the stress of spawning. He said no estimate of the number of fish killed has been made but rafts of 200 to 300 fish can be found all around the shoreline of the bay. The bacteria apparently attacks the gills of fish so this vital area of the fish doesn't function properly. Fricke said no other species of fish have been affected, although it is possible they walleye choked to death on a crappie at Willard Bay recently after the fish, in hopes of obtaining a meal, bit off more than he could swallow. Fricke said an apparent lack of smaller forage fish have caused the walleyes to dine on larger fish.
