The next burners gave up, too - Only One He only dug one hole but it was an elongated L because he missed the cap the first three times. Then he ate some lunch (that had been cooked on the one remaining burner and the oven) and went back to work. Well, I reasoned, I can cook on three burners and the oven. When I called the septic tank man he said it would be the next day before he could get to us. We were to dig up the tank and hed be there at one p.m. Husband called a contractor to dig it with a back hoe, before he sat down to dinner that night. (While I was fixing- dinner, another burner on the stove quit the job. That left two burners and the oven to cook with.) When the back hoe operator got here the next morning, he brought the telephone man with him and a whole bunch of papers. Oh joy. A telephone line runs directly north and south over the tank. East and west a water line is laid a few inches to the north of where the men needed to dig. The hole would have to be dug by hand. Me being a miserly soul, I offered to dig the hole myself for the same wages as the contractor wanted: six dollars an hour. But husband refused and dug it himself, with the help of a friendly neighbor. The baby The Middle Marrieds Willard Wrapup by Arlene Holden Husband and I always wanted to buy an older home so we could have the fun of fixing it up the way we wanted. But neither of us realized that fixing up meant rebuilding. The day we got a taste of what was coming was the day we hooked up the washer. I put a batch In while the two little girls were in the tub. That was a mistake on both counts. The girls pulled two tiles off the bath room walls and we discovered all the tile was loose either and necessitates replacement or reglueing. Then when I went downstairs to get the clothes out of the washer, I stepped into three inches of raw sewage, a very uncomfortable sensation. The septic tank had backed up all over my about to be washed, sorted clothes. For the next 24 hours we would be running next door to the bathroom. And that is the most inconvenient arrangement possible with four kids. week visiting her mother Mrs. held a five years, I had forgotten how neighborhood kids congregate around holes. So when the man came, I had to stay outside while he took each load to wherever he took them. I dont think any of the mothers around would have appreciated that smell on a wet child. When my stomach started to lurch, I decided to rake the leaves and burn them to compensate for that smell. Burning trash would have smelt better. After the man was paid and gone and the hole covered up again, we sat down to dinner of hamburgers and a potato casserole. Yep, you guessed it, the oven gave up the ghost. It is well nigh impossible to serve hot meals cooked on only one burner. half-bake- d Strike Three After dinner husband and son played ball and one of them missed. The glass on the storm door is now taped while awaiting the day when we have time to replace it. Things certainly were easier when we rented and the landlord was the one to lose sleep worrying about the house we lived in. Pack 215 held their pack meeting last Thursday.
