Show 16 BOX ELDER JOURNAL, Brigham City, Utah Thursday, June 5, 1975 Mantua Meanderings by Arlene Holden After being cooped up with a new baby and sick kids one right after another all winter long, I developed a classic case of cabin fever. I especially hated the days in March, April and May when the sky cleared and it looked like I could take the kids for a walk. It never failed that by the time I got coats on the little ones and boots on me and scarves and gloves passed all around, the weather had changed and we stood at the door and watched a howling blizzard march across the bay. When husband saw I was getting a bit goofy, he decided a vacation is VrXT'iJhere agreed and asked hujj. iiere he and the kids were going. My nephew in Washington sent us an invitation to his graduation. Husband could only get away for a few days if at all. I decided that if I was going to travel 800 miles with four restless children and my ten dency towards carsickness, I was going to stay for longer than 24 hours. ''1', Moms Rescue Mother came to my rescue when she asked me to bring her car up. So it worked out that Mother drove up with friends and visited along the way the first week in May. I would bring her car up with the two little ones two weeks later and husband would bring up the two big kids the next week. My other nephew who has been working in Ogden decided to go along and help me drive. I did my visiting teaching for Relief society, prayed that Primary would miss me, wrote two weeks of columns for the paper, packed my bags, put clean sheets on all the beds, and left right after Primary. To tell you what kind of a trip we had might best be suggested by the quick turn around we had to make to get baby's bottle we loft at home. My brother and his family live in Wendell, Idaho so we stopped and had supper with them. We originally planned to stay overnight with them, but decided the lesser of two evils would be to drive all night. Wheres Dad? Whenever we stopped for gas (we had no trouble buying it at 70 and 75 cents a gallon) the daughter would say, I need to be home. Lets go get Daddy. But it wasnt too bad until Soap Lake, Wash., at 5:25 in the morning when the baby awoke and wanted her breakfast. All we had was an orange, half a donut, and a cold bottle of milk none of which she wanted. It is exactly 1,274 screams with interspersed various whimpers and sighs between Soap Lake and my sisters front door in Coulee Dam. Even though we were almost nervous wrecks by the time we got out of the car it was worth it. We saw the nephew graduate and were appropriately proud. We also were present at the dedication of the just finished chapel presided over by Marion D. Hanks. And we stayed up every night until the cookoo clock was We all you kook. saying thoroughly enjoyed the visit except when the baby had diarrhea, son and eldest daughter took a nose dive off the bike and daughter fell against the brown thing in the bedroom and got a goose-eg- g on the side of her head. Stopped Off On the way home we stopped at Twin Falls, Idaho and saw the place where Evel made his famous jump. Much more impressive were the Shoshone Falls with its perpetual rainbow. ; We made it home with a minimum of problems and have come to a big decision. The best vacation is the one you have after you get home while you rest and recover. ! A bridal shower was held for Joyce Wetzel at the home of Karen Ball. Play In Works A Bicentennial play is in the works to be presented in con by Karen Stokes his return, his family have tied yellow ribbons all over there (as close as they could get to Oak is the front tree because that would be more visible) and welcome signs on their front porch and on the L&T sign on entering Mantua. (They do not sound the least bit excited, do they folks?) Well, I wish it would get sunny, sunny, again like it was there for a few days, wow, the house got clean from inside to out, even Mr. Morris stopped by with the windex to help out. But I guess, when it does start to warm up really a lot, we will appreciate it more because we have gone so long without it being that way. Phone To 723-347- by Karen Stokes Mr. and Mrs. Dean Firth of Bothwell had as their guests Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Roberts and children Ronald, Donna, All Halllngs Sunday Hallings afternoon all ihe families, Clairs, Darwins, Roberts, and Halls, plus Steve Saras family (because he roommated with Delbert at college) went to Merrill Hallings son Delberts missionary farewell. His call is to Korea. They attended the service and then had a get together at the home following the service. Our closing news is: Melvern F. Plamer is returning today from the Philippines. He had been there for two years on his mission. He has served as district leader and zone leader while there. He says he hates to leave now, but he is looking forward to coming home. It seems strange when these fellows leave, you think that two years seems as if it would be forever and then they return before you can hardly imagine two years have actually sped by and they really have so many They went to Victorville that night and stayed and got up at 4 a.m. the next morning to return home. Same Morning The same Monday morning the Explorers also left to go on this super activity also to California. Taking them was Robert Wallentine. They stayed near Disneyland also, but not at the same motel. Going were Brad Hall, Keith Nelsen, John and Dean Bigler, interesting relate. For all to experiences interested, his homecoming will be on the 15th of June. And to welcome him on Welding course offered at USU Salt Lake City on Saturday where they visited Temple and other places Square a delicious turkey dinner before returning to their home in Texas.
