At times it has not been easy because the city library hasnt always been at the forefront of municipal priority. It has, however, received more attention during the past two years and now the library board faces the task of naming a successor to Miss Wight. Theirs is an important quest and we know board members are sensitive to it. LaPreal Wight is a gracious lady and when she steps down as city librarian, we and many others are going to miss her. The Brigham City native has been at the post for 27 years and she concedes during the period there have been both good times and heartaches. But her memories are positive ones. More on marriage policy Editor: The June letter of Mr. Tom Stoddard has compelled us to interject our viewpoints concerning the school boards recent decision to permit regular school attendance for married or pregnant high school students. 27 In the first place, we express our full agreement with the earlier letters of Messers Coleman and Glover in support of that policy change. Mr. Stoddard, however, raised several points which demand a swift and logical refutation: (1) The claim is advanced that the countys high schools are insufficiently staffed to provide the special counseling services suggested in the board action, without cutbacks in services for the majority. He asserted that reality and logic lead to this conclusion. He did, of course, offer no statistics. As 1974 graduates of Box Elder high school, we are personally aware that many counselors have excess free time, even with a full workload. Nevertheless, if Mr. Stoddards allegations were correct, a sacrifice would be morally and prudently sound. And again, the school board action was sufficiently broad so as to permit the hiring of what minuscule numbers of personnel would be required. And e and paperwork in again, the removal of all of the withdrawl from school will create time to spare. Mr. Stoddards plea for reality would seem to be unreal. (2) Move to the gentlemans remarks concerning what he considers to have been the past usefulness of night school in aiding these pupils. He drops a bombshell, solemnly declaring that night school has been phased out. Mr. Davis is of the opinion that Senator LaFollette will cut some figure in the coming election sufficient at least to defeat Calvin Coolidge. fostered our own disbelief, it must have fostered shock on the part of the school board: no section of the new rule abolishes night school. What reason does Mr. Stoddard have for confidently assuming students will no longer have this option? reverse (3) Our critic then raises the banner of discrimination to protest a situation whereby standards of attendendance could be lessened for these students in the event of medical need. While it may be true that a pregnant girl could miss 20 school days, the new policy specifically recommends home instruction. She is not given a blank check. Neither is she given a privilege: it is a long standard policy, at BEHS to grant a student missing three or more consecutive days a visiting teacher program. No penalty is extracted. (4) The moral and philosophical atrophy of Mr. Stoddards letter is most vehemently expressed in its final point. He disagrees with the presumption that minorities should be given special attention. They should, he says, be given nothing more than an equal chance, which he defines as access to services available. However, when a student, whether through poverty, race, language, culture, or pregnancy, is set back a step from the norm, then services other those available are the only mechanisms towards equality. are not dealing with an insignificant minority. Todays college streakers seem to have adopted this tactic as a mild alternative to the campus riots of past years, and it is now considered the in thing to do. But there are other deeper motivatons. Carried to the extreme of adults running naked in public, it is considered a form of regression a reversion to earlier infantile or childish patterns of behavior. Since the city courts by the community center were being used for lessons and had no lights, I made my way down to the high school to play there. After a wait, I played my set of tennis and went home. On the way home, my partner and I thought that it might to be a good idea if we came down early in the morning, so thats what we did. Well, we hadnt been there very long when a young gentleman employed by the city stood in the middle of our game and informed us that he wanted the court in order to teach his tennis class. Now, I wasnt feeling too great in the first place because I was losing and this guy telling me I was all through didnt help matters at all, so I hit him with a tennis ball and told him he could find another court. Which now that I think about it, was a rude thing to do and besides that, it wasnt very nice at all. Anyway, it comes down to the fact that the city could use some more tennis courts. However, I am rather uninformed about the financial aspect of this undertaking so I would ask for some knowledgeable authority to respond and give me some concrete reasons why courts cannot be built. If they are good reasons, I will be satisfied, but if they are not, I intend to take some action. In conclusion, we ask that he answer his own challenge: When you have answers to these legal and moral questions of fairness, lets talk about logic and reality. Well, Mr. Stoddard?
