Helping to answer that scary question for elementary school children are members of the Soroptimists and PTAs in each school as they continue the block safety parents program. Bright orange and black signs are provided by the Soroptimists club, along with instructions for setting up the program in local schools. In turn, the PTA finds a family in each block on normal routes to their school. Safety parents are families in which at least one adult is usually home at the time that children walk to and from school, and who are willing to help a child in case of an emergency. The schools are also to instruct the children as to the meaning of the signs, and also make them realize that the homes are to be used for troubles and not as convenient stops for drinks of water or telephoning. As Isabella Buland, Soroptimists president and school teacher, states, maybe the homes will only be used for small services but well never know how many tragedies they might have averted since the program was established.
