Show Quality vs. Quantity BOX ELDER JOURNAL, Brigham City, Utah Thursday, Avgust 23, 1973 Wild trout flourish tries it again with Locomotive bass without stockers In the minds of most trout fishermen, there is quite a bit of difference between catching a brilliantly colored wild trout and his paier counterpart freshly netted from a hatchery pond. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources in 1971 initiated a trout wild management program in response to the growing demand Tor quality as well as quantity in the states trout fishing opportunities. The term wild trout in Utahs program is used to designate two management trout trout. The and stream-bre- d ' red systems-stream-rea- stream-reare- utilizes system d fingerling stockings in waters that do not allow natural reproduction. While the trout are not wild oy Jjure definition, they exhibit trout characteristics. Stream-bre- d managing is used on which streams support breeding populations of brown, cutthroat or rainbow trout. Trout Management For wild trout management to be successful, stocking of trout of catchable size must be discontinued. Studies have wild shown that trout population numbers drop drastically within the first two years after hatchery-reare- d trout are added. By contrast, when stocking of catchables is discontinued, wild trout populations have been able to almost triple in two rainbow years. There are roughly 3,200 miles of trout stream in Utah. The wild trout management program is in operation on seven waters. These include portions of the Provo, Blacksmith Fork and Duchesne rivers and Mammoth creek, and the full lengths of Whiterocks river, U.M. creek and Seven Mile creek. Division biologists consider limitation of fishing pressure important to the successful management of wild trout fisheries. This problem is largely taken care of naturally, since the success rgte for these waters is more dependent upon the skill of the angler. Intensive Stocking The wild trout program has resulted in more intensive stocking in certain waters. Efforts have been made to increase the stocking frequency and to do a better job of fish distribution. Fish no longer stocked in wild trout areas have been transferred to the intensive areas. Waters given the intensive area designation include Uinta river in Uinta canyon, below creek Panguitch Panguitch lake, Logan river in Logan canyon, Sevier river in Kingston canyon, North Fork Both nearby Logan and Blacksmith Fork rivers have been rated good fishing according to a weekly fishing summary issued by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. The Logan river is good on impoundments for albino trout and good to excellent on the upper reaches of the river, fly fishing goat-tyin- g More restrictions put on game hunts cutthroat; recently stocked The Blacksmith is good for rainbow on all impoundments fishing early and late. Here is a list of other areas and conditions collected by conservation officers: Pine view reservoir Fair for rainbow from shore, good from boats trolling with pop gear and worms or yellow and orange After board hearing with rainbow. The animal may undo some of its good work, however, by eating the bark of the same trees. Fewer control permit hunts were authorized for 1973 because an anticipated increase in hunting pressure during the general season will provide adequate harvest of deer normally taken by control permits, according to Rodney John, game biologist for the Division of Wildlife Resources. . - " Improved Range Improved range conditions throughout the state will allow the cutback this year. However, a late hatch this year on Utah marshes lead to a decision to begin the season a week later to avoid flightless ducks. ' t Bag Limits The bag limits were set at five daily and 10 in possession for ducks and six daily with no more than two of the dark species for geese. Duck season will continue through Jan. 6, while goose season closes Dec. 16. The Flyway council forecasts a smaller flight this year. A report on the study was issued by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. Here are the contents of that report. barrels were Six tested for choke deformation with various shot metals; two full-chok- e with copper, two with steel and two with lead loads. Five thousand rounds were fired through each barrel. After 5,000 rounds of steel shot, bulges of .0057 inch to .0065 inch were clearly visible on the outsides of two test barrels at the chokes. With lead and copper shot, bulges measuring from .0005 Inch to .0014 inch developed at the chokes. (A bulge begins to be visible after about .0010 Inch to .0015 inch increase in barrel diameter.) About 40 to 50 percent of the total 5,000 round deformation with steel shot occurred in the first 500 rounds. Pattern Change Patterns did not change No significantly during the testing, and it has been found that there is no significant pattern change for barrels with less than .010 inch deformation at the choke. Deformation of the six test barrels was considered to be a cosmetic change only and did no not compromise safety or pattern performance. However, the thin, soft barrels of some doubleguns are another matter. A steel shot bulge in a double-barr- el shotgun occurs more quickly, with be more severe, and the barrels may separate. Severe choke deformation with steel shot can also occur in modern slngel-barrguns with barrels of thin and or soft steel. St West 1st Nariti IOOAN ril-fl- il le VALUZ! Logan, Blacksmith From BC Reservior These larger bass were obtained from the Brigham City reservoir at Mantua. According to Dexter Pitman, fisheries manager of the northern region of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, game fish obtained from other sources outside the state dont seem to be able to survive in the slaty water. He hoped that the larger bass seined out of the Mantua reservoir will be able to survive in the remote ponds. He also feels the larger fish wont become prey of large birds. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is going to try it again at Locomotive Spring. A total of 325 largemouth black bass, large enough to survive the tough elements the salty waters have been released recently in West Locomotive and Baker ponds. The fish ranged from five to nine inches. Conservation officers expect to released about 2,000 more in the spring. The stocking of the larger fish followed a plan this past year of several thousand fry bass obtained from the federal government. The smaller fish apparently fell prey to birds and the salinity of the water, according to reports. The second stocking was done after six bass were held in special cages where they could be checked periodically.
