The Charrioteers wore long, white, sleeveless dresses-- Darwin Bywater (winner of a whip by Four Season Supply for the loser of the closest run race in the aged horses) Harry Hinck over Verl and Jess Udy. We had such beautiful weather last week I expected the stand to be filled. If horse racing isnt your thing but you like people, come and listen to the music Ben Tanaka plays, it adds a lot of atmosphere to the occasion. , (Thats a thought). They drove 12 treacherous miles instead of 440 yards. As many as 40 teams entered the race, with two to four horses on the team. The drivers had a whip in one hand and a knife in their belt to cut in case of an accident, and here is the payoff, they had the traces tied to their waists! You can tell our drivers are more highly regarded because we dont insist they be tied to the team or the chariot. The horse game was very similar to now. Horses were brought in from distant provinces to race. The breeding and training of horses was most highly thought of and the cities leased them lands to use to help compensate the costs. How about that? They didnt have the county commissioners we have now to provide them with the great facilities we enjoy. Here are next weeks races. There may be a few changes due to the fact that race horses are more vulnerable to accidents than anything I know. Stall them Friday night, sound and healthy and Saturday morning they wont be able to race, due to some mysterious malady that strikes when your tired and aching back is turned. This is much more exciting and the earth fairly shakes as they thunder down the track. That is one reason we are out here every Saturday for 14 our weeks, pitting teams against each other. Only four teams can make it. The rest of us must be here because we love these animals we work with. They become a part of us, just like our kids. We brag about them, tell some pretty tall tales, but they are ours and we would fight to the wire defending them. By the way, have you ever heard of a guy with just one horse? The disease is fatal, once contracted.you end up with the Every' wek' the unexpected happens and not just upsets as to the winner of the race. This cold winter the horses have slid, slipped, lost their grip on the icy track and even fallen down. Ive been wondering when there would be an incident on the turn just past the finish line. We have had some close ones and last week was no exception. Ray Udys team was flying around the turn, one horse fell, the other one dragging it along, the chariot swayed, almost throwing Ray out. The horse jumped up quickly, still inside the tuggs, and continued on around the track. Ray is either a darn good driver or has been living right. Id like to know how Rhodes and Nielsen are going to divide a prize they won last week for the winners of the closest won race in the colt division. Dave and Jims Husky Service can put five gallons of gas in each tank, but only half car wash Ive ever heard of is when I try it. Maybe theyll draw cuts. Here are last weeks winners.
