Show 4 BOX ELDER JOURNAL, 3,igbam City, Utah Thursday, January 14, 1971 By octal cene Sarah Yates, Society Editor Telephone PA Sorority Has State Council Meeting Here Alpha Chi chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha hosted the State Council meeting in Brigham City on Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Community Center. With 58 members hailing from throughout Utah as far south as Green River, the women worked on plans for tjie general board meeting to be held in Salt Lake City on Jan. 16, when general board members will make final plans for the International convention. An open house will be held on Jan. 16 at the Hotel Utah for area sorority members to meet the general board members. Plans will be outlined and announced for the International in Convention set for July Salt Lake City, when Epsilon Sigma Alpha members from across the United States will gather to discuss sorority business and get acquainted. The next meeting of the state council is scheduled for Green River on March 14, with several local members and officers planning to attend. Church Rites Marry Couple Mr. and Mrs. Edward A. Otte Florida announce the marriage of their daughter, of Miss Ann Ryall Otte, to Brent Robinson Fox on Saturday, Jan. 9, at Sausalito, Calif. The bridegroom is the son of the Rev. and Mrs. Earl Seymore Fox of Brigham City, who the together with bridegroom's grandfather David J. Oldham, attended the wedding. Attending the bridegroom as best man was his brother, Brian Fox, of Las Vegas, Nev. The ceremony was performed in St. Marys Star of the Sea church with the local clergyman assisting in the rite. A native of New Jersey, the bride is a TWA hostess based In San Francisco. Following a three week honeymoon In Europe, the couple will reside in Reno, Nev., where Brent will be employed in an auditing and accounting firm. Newcomers Set Annual Lunch With Speaker Dr. Robert B. Shelton will be guest speaker at the Welcome Wagon Newcomers club annual luncheon slated for Wednesday, Jan. 20, at noon at Holy Cross Lutheran church. He will discuss the topic of drug abuse. Reservations must be made by Monday by calling Sandra with Garroutte at cancellations also required by that date. Babysitting will be available in Gillespie hall. Boy that extra piece of candy and rich holiday fare really crept up on us didnt it? Right around the hips to be exact. So now we turn to the favorite indoor sport this time of year, calorie counting. There are many kind of dieters but the two most prevelant kind are those who are going to start tomorrow and those who not only eat like a sparrow but chirp about it. Then there's the crash diet faddists who go down fast and can be counted on to gain it all back eventually. Some folks just have to be constantly on guard and to those I leave the words of Adele Davis. Eat breakfast like a king, eat lunch like a prince but eat dinner like a pauper. Now if youll wait a minute while I get out my carrot stick to munch on you have one too - and well chat awhile on Party Line between munches. Moving Fast Mr. and Mrs. Mark Nielson and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Webb were caught up in a flood of events last month. The Nielsons took a three-da- y break in activities to visit in Las Vegas and just got back in town in time to attend the wedding of Susan Nielson, their granddaughter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Nielson, Jr. of Ogden. She was married in the Haines House to Dennis Gray of Great Falls, Mont. On Dec. 17, Bruce Webb, son of the Lloyd Webbs of this city, was married to Paula Cofer of Cheyenne, Wyo. in the Logan LDS Temple. An open house at the Webbs honored the couple on Dec. 19. They left Jan. 5, for Tucson, Ariz. where he will spend the next year and a half on an assignment with the U.S. Air Force. On Dec. 19 too, the Dale Nelsons of Ogden welcomed their first child, a boy, in an Ogden hospital. They will name their new son Michael Sean. Mrs. Nelson is the former Marsha Webb. This is the first grandchild for the Lloyd Webbs for and second the Mark Nielsons. On Christmas Eve the Nielsons entertained 30 family members at dinner at the Idle Isle. Following dinner they went to the Nielsen home and exchanged gifts. great-grandchil- d Traveling Around Mrs. Loverda Lee spent Christmas in Salt Lake City with her and daughter Mr. and Mrs. James Fletcher and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Call. She traveled with the Calls to Phoenix, Ariz. where they paid a holiday visit to her grandson and his wife Mr. and Mrs. Lee Call. While they were in Phoenix they were dinner guests of former Brighamites Mr. and Mrs. Louis Bowen and son-in-la- News DUP Deseret Camp of the Camp Daughters of Utah Pioneers will meet at the home of Mabel Crofts, 61 North Third East, on Thursday, Jan. 21, beginning at 2 p.m. All members are urged to be present. Deseret Fort Brigham Fort Brigham Camp of the daughters of Utah Pioneers will meet Friday, Jan. 15, at the home of Mrs. Ella Hunsaker, 531 North Third West. The event is scheduled for 9 30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with leaders a d officers of the Box Elder Neighborhood acting as official hostesses for the annual adult leadership conference. Leaders, troop committee members, and officers from Diti ict I and II of the Utah Girl Scout council will be present for the day. They will include PaUi Case, Marine biology oppo. unity; Colleen Elwell, experiment in Japanese living; and Sharon Elsey, pioneer heritage opportunity. The afternoon will include a discussion by Darnell Hayme on black culture, a presentation on oriental customs by the Hill Air Force Base Foreign Wives club, and Navajo Indian ceremonial dances by students from Intermountain school. During the Fielding Visit Mrs. Geneva Richards of Brigham attended the Social Development clubs 50th Anniversary Homecoming held at Stephens Cafe in Garland Thursday afternoon. She remained to spend a few days visiting her son and Mr. and Mrs. daughter-in-laRex Richards and family in Fielding Benefit Party Program Held Set by Local At BE Home Newcomers Club High priests of the Harper LDS ward sponsored the Jan. 7 home evening program at Pioneer Memorial nursing home with Einar Larsen presiding and Marion E. Gibbs conducting. Newcomers club will sponsor a Benefit Bridge party on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at the Elks lodge, with a luncheon to precede the afternoon of bridge. Doorprizes donated by local merchants will add to the fun of the afternoon, with babysitting services also available by reservations. Reservations for tables and babysitting may be made by calling Barbara Sawdon at The club also is offering bridge lessons locally on Tuesday evenings, with interested persons asked to call Frank Sawdon at the above number for further information. Enjoys Dinner Marlene Munns led the congregation in singing to open the program, accompanied by Jolene Yates. The invocation was offered by Ferris Kent. Munns Oralene played several musical numbers on the accordian followed by a piano solo by Jolene Yates. Marion Gibbs sang a solo accompanied by Jolene Yates, and Bishop Joseph Yates gave a short spiritual talk. The concluding number was sung by the congregation and Yates Bishop gave the benediction. Short Visit Mrs. Ernest Anger enjoyed Sunday dinner with her and daughter Mr. and Mrs. James Westley and family in Brigham City. son-in-la- Olive Peterson of Brigham City is spending a few days visiting her sister Mrs. Brooks Shuman and family in Tremonton. Music Society Meets Friday Monthly meeting of the Cecilian Music Society will be held on Friday, Jan. 15, at 1 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Darlene Ebeling. will be Mrs. Kathleen Bradford. Lesson for the afternoon meeting is entitled "The Beat of Today and will be presented by Mrs. Ruth Lemon. The presentation will include an analysis and discussion of some of the music which has high appeal for modern teenagers. The presentation promises to be a very interesting and informative one, states a club spokesman. All members are encouraged to attend the meeting. Booklore Club Enjoys Review Book Lore club held its monthly meeting on Thursday, Jan. 7, at the home of Mrs. Faye Hanson. There were 18 members present to hear guest Anne Rasmussen review the book "Animal Farm" by Geroge Orwell, which was enjoyed greatly by the members. Delicious refreshments were served 'by the hostess at the conclusion of the evening Ruth 723-622- 9 called on Mrs. Amber Hamson a Doyle. They were gone about week and on the return trip visited the Glen Canyon Dam Mrs. Lee reported there were many beatuiful flowers in Phoenix and the desert was beautiful. Mrs. Jane Clark returned Sunday from a holiday trip to Concord, Calif, where she spent Christmas with the Baty Morrisons and their children Bart, Todd and Scott. While she was there she spent on day with the Claud Sloeys who also live in Concord. Briefing You Mr. and Mrs. Fullmer Allred are all settled in their apartment in Salt Lake City. They moved there so he could attend to his duties as Extension Or- namental Horticulturist. Brigham City visitors last were former Sunday Brighamites Mr. and Mrs. DeVon Cottam. They visited his mother Mrs. Bennett Cottam who is confined to the hospital following surgery, and also called on other relatives and friends. The Cottams and their two children Troy and Christen Lynn have just moved back to Utah after an absence of nearly five years. Their most recent address was Indianapolis, Ind. They will make their home now in Salt Lake City where he is employed. Mrs. Cottam will be remembered here as the former Linda McGee. Mrs. Bertha Christensen was so happy to have her son and family Mr. and Mrs. John Sherwin Christensen and son Otis of Vancouver, Wash, spend the Christmas week here with her. Epsilon Meets For Lessons Epsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met recently at the home of Edna Jeppesen, where their opening they followed ritual with a short business meeting. President Kaye MacFarlane turned the time over to Louise Young to discuss the upcoming benefit ball for the Heart Fund which will be sponsored by the sorority. A short skit was presented by Sharon Andersen and Louise Young on the correct approach and attitudes towards selling tickets for the benefit event. A combined lesson was begun The by Susan Maero on in Pleasures of Possession she talked which about collections and valuable possessions and urged that the members share such items with one another. Donna Ball then completed the lesson on the topic "The Connoisseur, discussing rare old items and beautiful possessions that add joy to life. She urged that the members bring such items to meetings to be shared with others. Refreshments were served following the closing ritual, and the hostess gift was won by ANNIVERSARY - An will honor Mr. and Mrs. wedding anniversary open house on Sunday, Jan. 17, Joseph L. Nelson on their 50th Open House to Honor Couples Golden Date Mr and Mrs. Joseph J. Nelson of Thatcher will be honored at an open house on Sunday, Jan. 17 on the occasion of their golden wedding an- niversary. Friends and relatives are cordially invited to call between the hours of 2 to 4 p m at the Thatcher-Penros- e Ward No gifts please. Mr. Nelson was born June 17, 1899, in Brigham City, a son of Neils C. and Eliza Peterson Nelson. He moved to Thatcher with his parents as a small boy where he was reared and cultural hall. educated. Mrs Nelson, the former Fosee Knowles was born Nov. 1, 1899 in Avon, a daughter of Edward A. and Elizabeth Smith Knowles. She spent her girlhood in Avon and received her schooling in Cache County. Temple Rite The couple were married Jan. 17, 1921, in Salt Lake City. The marriage was later solomnlzed in the Logan LDS Temple. Mr. Nelson has served as a counselor in the Sunday School supermtendency, a counselor in the Thatcher ward bishopric for five years and bishop of the Thatcher ward for eight years. He has also been a scout leader. Mrs. Nelson served as a Sunday School teacher for 30 years and a Primary teacher for 33 years. She has also served in the YWMIA and the Relief Society organizations. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson served on an Eastern Atlantic States LDS Mission in 1963-64- , They are parents of two sons and four daughters; J. Glen of Elwood, Elwyn W, of Thatcher, Mrs. Don (Joyce) Housley of Mrs. Loren Tremonton, (Bessie) Kay of Roy, Mrs George (Lorna) Crozier of Bothwell and Mrs. Pandi (Colleen) Pali of Elwood.
