Show I WEEKLY REFLEX 15, 1977 DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL. DECEMBER mm LSDGIHlnitO) By DAVE WIGHAM This week marks the opening of basketball action in Region One and the Layton Start Douis County Baslteftall Tourney? Lancers have the task Royals. THE Lancers take a record to the game having dropped a couple of Lake City people long enough to figure it out, maybe one of these years someone out this way will figure out a way to make money and entertain the basketball fans. It took the Salt heartbreakers along the way but in all fairness the Layton crew is just now getting all the football out of their systems. Roy, on the other hand, WHAT IM talking about is the basketball tournament that the Salt Lake City schools are involved in this coming week. All the schools in Salt Lake, such as Highland, East, West, Skyline and the others are involved in a week long tournament to determine the city champion. Last year was the first year and the success was great. Money was made, the coaches got a look at the others, and the fans got a chance to view a lot of top notch games. Why not then have a county championship in Davis County each year. Thats right, have a tournament with the six schools from the County each year and have a traveling trophy for the winner. enters with three straight wins to run their mark to They too had a few games where the football still showed up more than basketball. THE BIG news for Layton fans is that Brandon Flint is coming back and is ready to play, in fact last week Brandon pumped in 8 points in the Lancer loss to East. Only a junior, this 64 forward became a starter for Doug Moon last year as a soph. Against the likes of a Roy High team, the Lancers will need his added height and experience. pre-seaso- n does a that little something extra. I think that lot for a program, but Im also in favor of the County tournament. The coaches will say that they already have to play certain teams twice so why play them a third time. In region play Bountiful, Viewmont, Clearfield and Layton all play one another a couple of times. So do the Davis' and Woods Cross clubs. So why play before they have to is the Question the coaches bring up. TO MAKE money is a good reason. Look around the games, not many paying cusgyms during tomers, but a County tournament would probably pack a few gyms around the area. n to see Coaches also travel many miles in their league opponents play to scout, why not save time and travel and put them under one roof for a week? pre-seaso- WHEN mentioning teammates, has become one athletes of the best in the state. Although only about 5 10 tall this great player will be the biggest problem for the Lancers this week. He is a good outside shooter but his quickness gives him the advantage over almost everyone trying to guard him. pre-seaso- MAYBE the coaches have a point in not wanting to play the tournament. Salt Lake tried it once and liked it. I only hope in the near future someone in Davis County tries the idea.. The fans want it, the players would like it, the coaches are skeptical. Two out of three isnt bad. LAST week Fred poured in points in leading his club to 20 a win over a good Kearns and Marc Moulton hold down the next two weights, 105 and 112, with both of them improving each week and each match. With another year remaining he could very well walk away ANOTHER sophomore, Andy Thompson, goes at 119 which is a tough weight for a youngster. In the real low THREE seniors then come into the picture with Bart Thompson at 132, Alan Porter at 138 and Mike Moll at 145. THE Darts usually take the weights from 126 up to 145 in dual meets, with the 167 and weights the wrestlers are usually underclassmen but by the 119 weight classification some seniors find their way into the picture. Andy gives away a lot of experience to those people, in time hell be a good one. Then comes the main brigade for the Darts led off heavyweight right behind them, to give the Davis crew a very competitive wrestling program. Sophomore Troy Cox goes for the Darts at the 98 pound class. Troy is learning all the time and has a lot of potential. These four usually come up with the majority of points for the Davis crew, they are all consistent and tough. .team thats a Darts. The coaches call him a consistent wrestler, he works hard, nothing flashy about him but he gets the job done. He is in a very tough weight classification. Junior Kevin Criddle, after a great football season, is just starting to pick up things in the 167 class. Kevin is the type of wrestler that makes things happen, sometimes his own quickness is his worst enemy, he is a fighter all the way and is fun to watch out on the mat. TWO more seniors round out the club with Lee Sluder going at 185 and Keith Malnar YOUR CARPETS COME CLEANER DRY if LAST LONGER quick Fernandes it would probably be the Lancers. People knew that Pendleton could shoot and score but Slagowski was the question mark, but he turned in a good performance against Woods Cross and proved he can score. BOUNTIFUL has been an up and down type club in mark posting their of . First they were down and lost to Ben Lomond, a game they should have won, then they got up for a couple of wins against Davis and Granger, then they went sour again and dropped a game to Kearns. Then to end on an up note they downed Woods Cross last week. The ironic part of their record is that their two losses came at the hands of probably the two weakest teams on the schedule. much depth and balance for the Roy club. pre-seas- tng 1 five wrestlers going for the title. Outside of them we only By DAVE WIGHAM had one other wrestler in Wrestling can provide some very strange happenings. For example, its very possible for a wrestling team to be stronger in tournaments than they are in dual meets with other schools. Such is the case with the Layton High finals, he was going for fourth place honors. So 1 guess you could say were were half tough. THAT means in dual meets the Lancers have five or six good wrestlers who usually win, but then the others are a toss-ubut in tournaments those five can usually put the team on or near the top. In that tournament last week, they were one of sixteen grapplers this year, they seem to do better in the tournaments they have been in than they have in dual matches. REMEMBER in dual meets the scoring is simple, either your team gets the points or the opponents do. In tournaments any one of sixteen, or whatever the number, of teams can get the points in a given weight class. Coach Mike Hansen of the Lancers points this out, "In the Madison, Ida. tournament we were in last week we had teams, the Lancers came away with third place honors. One of their better wrestlers was unable to compete which hampered their title hopes considerably. LEADING off in the 98 pound class for Layton is sophomore Lance Olsen who is improving with each match and is gaining confidence for the region battles, his coaches feel hell be a good one by the end of the season. The 105 class is a two man battle with each seeing varsity action. They have challenge matches with each other during the week with the winner going varsity and the other JV. These two, junior Wayne Gutierrez and Malnar is not considered big for his weight class by any means, hes only around 200 pounds which is small for heavyweights. He is strong and quick though which makes up for a lot of the weight loss. Hes a competitor wholl give the big boys all they can handle. THE Davis crew are in dual matches currently with a win over Murray and loss to Layton. This coming Tuesday, Dec. 20, the Darts travel down to Bountiful to battle the Braves in a dual meet. Time is 6 for the junior varsity with the varsity slated to go around 7:30 p.m. In their new region Box Elder is considered the toughest with Bear River close behind, but the Davis crew wont be too far in back of these two if past history is any indication. 1 Leo Jacobs Is Officer Of The Year An officer from Hill Air Force Base has been selected as the Air Force Logistics Commands Distinguished Company Grade Officer of the Year. The heavyweight is big junior Chuck Ehin, who goes 65 and 260, who placed second in region last year, and second in last weeks Idaho tourney. The main problem facing Chuck is no one to work out with during the week. Coach Hansen noted that if Chuck is aggressive and gets the take down then hell win it all. SO THE Lancers might not appear to be too tough by comparing dual meet scores, but come tournament time they will always be near the top. Senior Byron Weaver goes at 119 while another senior Billy Dugmore is at 126, along with Stott, Coach Hansen FLOOR TILES considers these three his strength in the lower weights. Weaver had a good tournament in Idaho last week including a victory over the defending state champion of that state. DUGMORE is another re- turning veteran, he probably would have placed high in region last year but an illness prevented that. His only loss a decision to a Bonneville kid, the latter won the MVP in the tournament, so coaches have hopes for this weight class. Junior Danny Love, thats a wrestling family if there ever was one, holds down the 132 class for the Lancers. Danny has a lot of ability and skill and Coach Hansen is looking for big things out of him. THE 145 pound class has been somewhat of a problem for Layton, one kid was hurt, another ineligible and that put the burden on sophomore Gary Christiansen. Coach Hansen calls Gary a great sophomore wrestler but in that weight he gives up too much experience. He usually goes up against seniors. At 138 is senior Mike Gallegos who is a consistent wrestler who is improving with each match. Junior Mike Meacham, who placed second in last week's Idaho tournament, is the strong fighter type, never knows when to give up, he was the surprise of the tournament. Winning gifts for the Lancers are very strong with senior Wayne Kittrell, a defending region champion. Wayne is one of the best wrestlers in the area, a definite state champion prospect. He has all the tools, knowledge, strength and skills to win the big one.
