I didnt realize that the girls sports would stir up such interest and controversy, had I known I would have started sooner. w Mml 1 By DAVE WIGHAM All indications point to a Clearfield victory when the Talcons travel up to Ogden this Friday to take on the Bonneville Lakers in the opening round of Region One basketball competition. scores IF THE are any indication then the Falcons should be heavy favorites as they have shown n a lot of promise in the warmup games. Coach Reid isnt all that happy about the results of their early games though as the Falcons dropped a couple of games that they probably should have won. THIS Clearfield team has the makings of a great club, already they downed the Bingham team that is sup- posed to be one of the best, if ' PAPERBACK BOOK EXCHANGE Per book cash for used paperbacks 10 Exchange 2 old paperbacks for 1 paperback! Last Friday the Falcons manhandled the Miners then they lost a one-poheartbreaker at West on Saturday. Maybe the club was a little down after knocking off the Bingham team the night before, one thing for sure the Falcons wont be down when they take on the Lakers. 84-6- 8, THE trademark of Falcon basketball in the past few years has been patience and defense, this year is no exception as they play a very tough sticky defense. If you dont believe me write to Bingham and ask one Mr. Roberts, hes the young man thats supposed to be the best big man in the state. When you stop and realize that Roberts is around 6 8 tall, which is about four inches bigger than any Falcon, and the Clearfield bunch held him to just 14 points, then you can start to realize the type of defense that they are capable of playing BEHIND, or in front whichever way you want to look at it, every successful basketball team is an unse'-fis- h playmaker type of guard. Clearfield has one such player in Darren Parry, who is like another coach on the floor. Darren is a very smart ballplayer who directs both the offense and the defense for Coach Reid making mistakes on the court. Look for the Falcons to win game one of the region wars. Game time is 7: 30 up in Laker gym. The Lakers now sport a 1 n mark, which is one of the best in Region One, but they havent played the type of competition that the Falcons have met. n IN polls the Clearfield bunch were always mentioned near the top. Coach Reid does a tremendous job of getting the most out of his players and they force their opponents into High this week's region opener at the Viewmont gym at 7: 30. People knew the Vikes had some talented people in their comer, but just how good they were no one really knew. After all the Vikes only have one returnee from last year, that being Kevin Hess. But this team is starting to jell, and that means problems for Region One clubs. I ,i out Weber FIRST of all let me say that the majority of the words were kind and I thank those people. Comments like, You do a good job with the boys and Im sure the girls will be just as good" were nice to receive. Some people took offense to some of the things I wrote and they too let me know, which I appreciate. I used to say the only occupation that others knew more about was coaching, but add journalism to that list. I really enjoy the letters I get, even if they are criticism, the only way I can improve the coverage is to give the readers what they want so keep them coming. ANOTHER lady called and wanted to point out some other interesting facts about the female volleyball tournament that just concluded. The Box Elder team won the 3A title, they only lost one match the entire year, guess who beat them. Woods Cross did. Way to go Wildcats. She too mentioned the Viewmcnt finish, so again congratulations Viking girls. te Look School, the Viewmont Vikings basketball team is getting up a head of steam and heading Brighton and a five pointer to Provo, the Vikes have come on strong to blow their last three opponents off the floor. One man wrote that after reading that article he looked to the next page and saw a big picture of the Bountiful gals playing volleyball with a two column story next to it. Well that was submitted by Bountiful High, I had nothing to do with it. Each week the schools write a column concerning the activities In the school, if they want to use a picture with it they are welcome to do so. If they want to write about girls athletics they are welcome. So yell at me for something, I did, Ill gladly take the blame and try to improve, but the Brave Talk and Odens Ode are nothing to do with me. If you want to take a photo and send it to me Ill do all I can to get it printed. first-tea- By DAVE WIGHAM Maybe I bit off more than I could chew when I wrote last week that I was going to start covering girls athletics for the paper. Since that article the phone hasnt stopped ringing and the mailman is probably sick and tired of delivering all that mail. RIGHT AWAY I better apologize to the Viewmont girls volleyball team. Somehow when I wrote about the recently concluded season their name was left off. And as I have been told, many times since, the Viking gals placed fourth in the state meet, which was the highest finish of any school in Davis County. Congratulations to the Viewmont team. Three Davis High School football players have been football polls this chosen on various season. The Darts placed runnerup in the Class honors were 1 to r, Ryan tournament.
