At the alone by Irape and bounds; present time there are three ngs on this are two which had of field structure, drill, several time to this prior Ing and the other derrick, been exploited and considerable money and a thorough teat building of Its black oil invested without any returna After value will be made within the next li a few months of careful investigation, oil however, several that large concerns demonstrated exbe commercial production might pected from the geologic structure exin Wyoming, and make occurring to ploration for oil In began state. the strides rapid Tbs old Idea which Jial prevailed for many years that Wyoming was a state where many ahowa of oil existed, but no large pool would ever be discovered, rapidly gave place to the newer idea that Wyoming offered excellent opportunities for the pioneer oil prospector. of tbla new idea Under the influence other prominent geologic structures and like Salt Creek were hunted outthen preparations made for 'testing soon in very with the drill, resulting state wide in th, activity becoming extent Naturalty the most obvioua had long been which j structure, in Wyoming were first-known to exist --with results whtch were t0 be tested, in tbs main encouraging., Some of these anticlines produced oil. some walarge volumes of gaa ahd some ter. Fields of IMsoovrry. Ths fields brought in are given b- low in ths order of their discovery: -. Byron. Salt Creek. Oreybull. Torch-light- - Saddle Bock. Hudson. Oregon Basin. Orass Creek. Buffalo Basin. Elk Basin. Big Muddy and Pilot Butts Dallas, a .small black oil field near Lander, and Spring Valley, a small light oil field In ths extreme Southwest part of the state, also Moorcroft, Cody and Shannon had bees discovered before the bringing in of Salt i ! ? M Creek. These fields cover most of the and prominent structures throughout the state. Some of the less favorable green oil structures began to be tested following the development of the above fields, and plana were laid by scouts representing ths larger operating companies forof delotailed surveys for the purpose cating tho more subtle anticlines exist. to which were known About this time increase In the price of crude stimulated a search for black oil fields, which hitherto had been regarded aa of little value. Black oiln occurs at a much lower geologic than green oil, so that anticlinal structures on which erosian had progressed to a point sufficient to remove and dissipate the green oil possibllith were reconsidered In the light of their black, oil value. Many of these structures are now being drilled and not without encouraging results One of lior-Iso- , days First Well Shallow. In ths light of ths many structures which are now being drilled la Wyoming, the question- - Is often asked why the pioneer operator In this state did not acquire and test more of ths localities now being drilled. The is obvious, tbs earlier oil prospector in Wyoming naturally tested first the structures which were most favorable, and then, encouraged by the results obtained, passed On to the less favorable or more subtle anticlines Also, some of tbs first wells brought In were relatively shallow ranging from $69 to 1 26(1 feet in depth and it required lime and experience to demonstrate that deep 011a would be found in this region The above Is only a repetition of the experience in oil In atate the Lnlon which has every afforded or is today affording a substantial supply of the world a petroer leum. Fifteen Structure. At the present time thers are about structures ill localities of geologic which tbe federal government has re- garded as of sufficient promise to warrant the withdrawal of tbe land from pnbbe entry. Many of these localities ware developed In part or entirely before the withdrawals were made. The esistanc of a withdrawal indicates that. In ths Judgment of government engineers the locality ia a likely place for the occurrence of oil. Thers are also many localities outside of and. entirely removed from government withdrawals which conservative operators have seen fit ts taka up aa prospective oil land, and are now testing same in a substantial way and at considerable expense, and soma of these places warrant the attention they are receiving About IS years age the Big Horn basin was mapped, and a bulletin published In l((lt by C. A. K lx her shows substantially all the structures in the basin which have since developed 01L The Istest discovery of importance, the Big Muddy pool, was first mapped out by United States Geologist V. H. Barnett. Mr. Barnett died before the dome was tested by tbe A. EL Humphreys svndicate, and in recognition of his work, Mr. Humphreys, after the Big Muddy pool was drilled into last year, mads up a purse of 210,609 for Mrs Barnett and her children. Wyoming Foundation. Formations In Wyoming dip more abruptly than In Kansas and Oklahoma. In the there is a gradual west dip from the eastern nt 3S mssiiumuwamu aa far as oil edge of the oU bait out ee even that Is produced; this dip is the rule of an average thirty feet to tho mile ie commonly used In geoof Wyological work. The steep dips and local. The ming are both general Sait Creek dome ia aa prominent, geologically! as the roof of a house, and tbe Wa Creek sand, after diving up and down two or three times in the and forty miles between Balt Creek Big Muddy, ia found 2.200 feet lower at the latter pool. Fifty or sixty miles southwest of Big Muddy, the Wyoming red beds (Cbugwater) may be aeen on top of tbe ground Thia Cbugwater formation belongs 1,200 to 1,400 feet under the Wall Creek series, and would be perhaps 4.009 feet deep at Big Muddy Such a condition in Oklahoma would be equivalent to the Mississippi lime Outcropping at Guthrie. of Salt Creek About 14 miles west known is a productive district aa Powder river. Right now it ia black the standing rathar high among oil possibilities. Tbe ml sands which produce at Bait Creek, twelve or fifteen miles away, outcrop and make an escarpment around thy Powder river structure. Not only that the Mowrte beds, and even tbe Dakota sandstone also outcrop. In other words, at Powder river a test well has its rig foundations set on a formation which would be found perhaps 1.400 feet under the pay sand at Bait Creek, and a si ijlpw test st ths former place wilt i enetrate formations to reach which it would be impossible " at the latter. No Continnoas FMda. This condition Is more or leas general throughout Wyoming. Thorn are great areas where all the important green oil formations have long sines eroded sway end yet other places stratwhere ths youngest um cannot be reached with the drill. On tho other hand, the principal Wyoming oil formations manage to get back within drill distance from the surface pretty often and In widely separated localities. How many mors pools Wyoming may disclose, and how much petroleum the stats may produce, are questions for tho future. Borne authorities make vast estimates, others say pessimistically that tbe Best hare been found. Certainly- it has been only a few years since real development started, and the few pools so far apart make possible, barring peci'liar geologic conditions, a - vast territory-Ther- e are only about 440 producing wells In tbe state, and not 100 important dry holes in wildcat territory. Compared with Oklahoma's 2 000 producing wells and 4,000 dry holes, Wyoming has not been very thickly punctured, a fact which predicates greater things for ths future than have been realised in tbe past. There are fifteen or twentv important structures In the state which have not been tested. 8o far the producers have been content to confine their development work, to the bold and prominent domes on which then was little doubt of success. Even Big Muddy was let alone, because its structure wss not geologically perfect. Salt Creek fame punctured only two of 22 1917 the Salt Creek sands, a well 2,400 feet deep, on top of the Balt Creek structure, would be gt fascinating speculation la regard to structures of gentle or dip, Wyoming authorities are not Inclined to hold these of much Importance. The theory is at least heavy generally considered that the mounhydrostatic pressure (from the tains) would be likely to push oil on domes. This over such theory ts yet to be proved, however, and may have many local exceptions. Approximately 44 000 acres are Included within the limits of the United States petroleum withdrawals in Wyoming These withdrawals include in their acreage totals practically all territory except Big Muddy, all of the prospective pools and all of the structures.
