Last year, the intersection was covered with running water for weeks from Middle Canyon. This year, the water will run underneath the intersection and fall into a concrete Ibasin on the other side to eliminate erosion. Note deep gorge running top of photo. Flood Project Work On Time For 85 : Building bigger boxing gloves and a sneaky hard left hand has been the name of the game since last years bout against excess mountain runoff. Although water content levels in existing snowpack on area mountains is down in comparison to April 84, preparations for this springs expected match against runoff are at a fever pitch. With two years of flood fight experience (and the bitter taste of negotiating with Uncle Sam for flood damage remuneration), the county and Tooele City have agreed that sandbags are sandwell, cost bags and concrete pipes and walls more, but dont float away in the long run. Flood reconstruction and mitigation projects by Tooele City alone are totalling over $1.5 million. With financial help from FEMA, the state's Disaster Relief Board and irrigation companies, Tooele Citys goal this spring is to keep all runoff inside the flood control pipe and off city George Diehl says, gives the Fifth South flood canal street unlimited water carrying capacity. During the winter, a massive reconstruction project was undertaken to replace the outlet works inside the Settlement Canyon Reservoir. Just a few weeks ago, the new outlet was completed and is in operation for the first time since last May when mud and debris entered the reservoir and plugged the old outlet. Nonetheless, if the flood control pipes capacity is exceeded, a diversion box adjacent to will send water down Fifth South, which currently is being converted into a flood canal street with high curb and gutter. If needed, 250 concrete median barriers stand ready to contain even more water, which Mayor The following photographs only show a small portion of flood reconstruction and mitigation projects that have been completed or are under construction in Tooele. There are others within the city of equal importance, not to mention what is being done in other communities in prepara- streets. U-3- r 6 That problem proved more serious when irrigation company officials could not unplug the drain which was to be used for flood control. Instead, all excess water entering the dam went over the spillway. The rest is history. But for this year, a neW outlet is in place and stands ready to handle nearly 50 cubic feet per second of water in a draining capacity.
