Show 1982 25, A. T. Roberts Sports Editor Thure., Mustangs Impressive In Opening Games Dugway lost four players from last years state top-notc- h championship team, but apparently the Mustangs have enough talent remaining to put up stiff opposition to any team having designs on the Dugway crown. As an indication of the strength of the Mustangs, Dugway came up with two impressive victories in its opening games, defeating Duchesne and then pinning a loss on the always strong North Summit braves. Dugway will play East Carbon Friday, December 3 and Tabiona December 10 in their next two outings as they prepare for the league opener. 68-4- 55-2- 9 The victories over Duchesne and North Summit were typical wins for a George team. Balanced scoring throughout the line up, and a constantly changing defensive pattern that keeps the Mustang opponents throughout the game. Against Duchesne John DeWitt was the top scorer with 14 points, but it was the Mustang defense that was the big difference in the two quintets. lead After fashioning a at the end of two quarters the Dugway defense tightened up Bruce-coache- d something fierce, limiting Du- chesne to just six points in the third period as the Mustangs in- - creased their lead and it was all over for the Eagles. Coach Bruce used every player on his squad and 10 of them scored, with Jeff Brothers, Larry White, and Kerry Gardner hitting double figures, each with 10 points to go with DeWitts game 52-3- 1, high 14. And it was defense again against North Summit with Dugway employing a full court press that never let the Braves get into backcourt tandem in the state, with John DeWitt and Larry White forming the forward wall Dugway has no worries about its front five. These starters are backed by Bob Jackson, Steve Lundy, Levi Morton and Mike Kroff, which give the Mustangs plenty of reserve strength. Keep your eye on the Mustangs sync. NSs best quarter was the first when they scored 10 points, then things got worse, with NS scoring five counters in the second period, eight in the third and just six in the fourth period. After building up a fat lead at the end of the first half Coach Bruce began trying various combinations, and never played a v starter in the foruth period. Topping the scoring for Dugway was Steve Bruce with 19 big ones, and John DeWitt hitting the double digits again with 12 points. Coach Bruce was pleased with his teams effort and stated that the Mustangs could develop into a force to be reckoned with. "Weve got some work to do on the inside, but that will come with practice and game experience and once we get that blended with our outside game, we could be pretty tough. In fact, right now is a busy time for them assessing results of the states fall hunts. Much of this analysis involves legal as well as illegal kills. For example, big game biologist Grant Jense has been studying some 50 moose killed in Utah during the 1982 deer and elk seasons. Will hunts be allowed next year where these illicit kills occurred? I asked Jense. 'Those decisions are made by the board of big game control. But they usually go on the hard evidence amd recommendations of our office, and it could be, based on our findings, that several moose units which could have been open wont be due to carelessness and what in some cases appears to be other than accidental." Jense also stated that sportsmen complaints of high winter kill in northern Utah up to 80 percent in some Morgan County units should not be blamed on the state. "We did our best to get out sufficient doe permits in these critical areas because we knew what could happen. But much of this is private land and we have no control over the number of hunters allowedd on it. It is true there was much waste in what happened. But most of these private are charging fees to take deer. With the hunter not harvesting many of the does which we would like to have seen taken. Jense also predicts that when the final count is in, Utahs mule deer tally for this year will be very near last years excellent 34 land-owne- rs percent, "somewhere between per cent." He said the 30-3- 5 number of deer taken through the Daniels Canyon check situation was on a par with other years, but bluebird weather for the '82 opener is always a major factor in the type of success enjoyed this past FirsS: Secuiily Eferclto First Security Bank of Utah, N.A. He does not predict, from available counts, that hunting will be allowed on the three "deep south" units which have been closed for several years. This includes several where deer numbers are recuperating from severe drought and low fawn production like Elk Ridge near Blanding, but not enough to turn hunting pressure on it again. Jense expects trophy-onlhunting (four points on at least one side) to continue for deer units Henry Mountains and the south Book Cliffs. It is known that elk y and deer are on the increase in wilder sectors of the Book Cliffs up into the Ute Indian Reservation, but the latter remains off limits to "Continued energy fuel exploration has moved more roads and more people into the public lands on Book Cliff units, and continues to cut into deer herds there. Some large bucks were taken in 1982, but animals have been greatly reduced where access is becoming increasingly easier. UDWR officials are also keeping their eye on a potential number one world record buck bagged in the Beaver region with bow. Some exceptionally large bucks were also nailed by r terhunters in the rain west of Cedar City, while many nimrods have been hunting them in the pines on higher habitat, Jense emphasized. Utah enjoyed high success on antelope again, up around 95 per cent on many units, biological statistics show. Biologists have repeatedly said the mushrooming number of wapiti seekers, up to 35,000 in some years, havent hurt the resource, because when hunting becomes harder, the elusive bull elk is s bothered by fewer for until several years again numbers build once again. "Will Utah return to the either-sehunt again soon? I queried Grant. "Not likely at all in the near future. If we should, the recommendation would go with it to do so only for a year or so. We are harvesting on most areas what we need to to take the surplus animals, protecting range feed, although we need more hunters to harvest more antlerless deer in key regions." Whether we have taken enough will be answered primarily by the number of deer which die in the winter ahead. Incidentally, now is a good time for sportsmen to get out and see what we hunters missed.
