Show THANKSGIVING FEAST TURKEY 1982 25, The first thanksgiving? Plymouth historian James Baker notes that in all the writings of the Mayflower settlers, there are but two paragraphs describing any kind of feast. It was a harvest time bash that lasted three days, and there is no mention of anyone saying thank you to anyone else. After the party, the settlers took inventory of their remaining food and put everyone on half rations for the winter. Turkey never made it to the first Thanksgiving feast, according to Robert J. Meyers, author of The Complete Celebrations Book of American Holidays. Instead, the menu included venison, duck, goose, seafood, eels, white bread, corn bread, leeks, watercress and a variety of greens. Wild plums and dried berries were served for dessert. Letters To The Editor I Demanding Profession port says that the salary schedule in Tooele District was raised 8.1 percent this year. Editor: I am writing this in response to The Bulletin did not mention that the inflationary rate for the same period was over 10 percent. There was therefore a loss of about 2 percent in purchasing power for over half of the teachers within the Tooele District Schools. The previous year saw a decrease (the difference between the 3 percent adjustment and over 13 percent inflation) of 10 percent. Therefore within just two years the standard of living for over half of the districts teachers was diminished by about 12 percent. Obviously, teachers, like many others in the the article 'Teachers Salaries" published November 16, 1982. The article is written to make people believe that teachers are not only paid enough, but in many cases, overpaid. One must realize that a teacher, who shapes human minds, receives less salary per hour than a plumber, carpenter or a T.V. repairman. A teacher, in order to be certified, must a attend a minimum of four years of college and must go much further than that. The same cannot be said for the above occupations. Teachers do much more than teach. They are the surrogate parents during the entire day in which they also much take the roles of current recession are falling behind. The distortion which the Foun- dation encourages and for which the Utah Taxpayers Association is also fond is the inclusion in their percentages of the beginning steps of the salary schedule, never doctor or nurse, babysitter, guidance counselor, psychologist, public relation people and much more. Someone will trust their pipes to a plumber and pay them $20 an hour and trust their childrens minds to a teacher for $10 an hour. A teachers day also goes well beyond 8:00 to 3:30. Most teachers hours per put an additional week in to correct papers, make lesson plans, write reports, score tests, attend meetings and various acknowledging that beginning teachers salaries are purposely set very low as a probationary mechanism. The term "Cost of Living Increase can only apply to the schedule itself and is intended to make up lost purchasing power, 10-2- 0 . school and community related functions. PLUS-Cove- rage Its about time that people wake , up to the fact that teaching is a very demanding and stressful job and that a high degree of education is required. We are professionals just like doctors, lawyers and engi- for: Doctors visits in the home, office and hospital Emergency room treatment and tests Ambulance service Hospital outpatient services Private duty nursing Physical therapy And much, much more! caused by inflation. To encourage the public to be- lieve that teachers salaries' are more than keeping pace with inflation is not only a public disservice, it will encourage the public to believe that salaries are adequate to attract and keep capable new peo- ple in the profession. On the contrary, there are many indications that education is not attracting the quality of young professionals it enjoyed in the past nor which are needed to teach the increasingly technical job skills of the 1980s. Sincerely, Karl Swan, State Senator Signs Down Editor: Im writing this letter in regards to the sadistic people who knock down street signs! My husband and I were traveling east on Main Street in Grantsville when a car (going much too fast anyway), came flying down Cooley, went right in front of us, skidded across Main Street and almost had a head-ocollision with a car coming west on Main. The stop sign on Cooley had been knocked down. This is not the first these signs have been knocked section and cause an accident and possibly kill someone, anyone! If we had been any closer, the other night to the intersection there could have been a bad wreck. the Maybe that would have pleased sick person who knocked the sign down, but a lot of people, especially our two little girls would have suffered deeply. Hopefully it was an accident that the sign was down. (It should have been reported though.) However if it was a prank I hope this letter will make the pranksters think of the results the next time they think about knocking down a street sign. Do you really want to have a death on your conscience? Would reyou like to know that you are child a little for going sponsible through life without parents, or parents having to live without their precious children? Or maybe even killing a whole family? I hope not!!! Junie Gay Anderson n A husband and wife came to a bank to open a joint account. Being in a hurry, the man made out his signature card and left. "Let me see, an official of the bank said to the wife, "This is to be a joint account, is it not? "Thats right, smiled the wife. "Deposit for him, and checking for down. I wonder if the sick person or persons who knock these signs the Tylenol murders are funny?!!! This seems a similar type incident to me. It seems as if theyre just hoping that someone will miss the sign, go into the inter down think me. neers. fts about time that our communities recognize us as professionals and give us a little more earned respect to the teaching profession instead of constantly belittling them!
