Goebel 1 West Wendover Justice of the Peace, Joseph P. Goebel, died Nov. 17,1982 in Wendover. Appointed as Justice of the Peace earlier this year, Mr. Goebel was elected to the office on November 2. He was born February 28, 1925 in Kansas City, Kansas. After living in Kansas. Utah and California, he moved to Wendover in 1974 where he was employed as a chef at Jims Casino, later at the Stateline Hotel and the Hideaway Casino. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps form 1943-4spending 18 months in Hawaii and received an honorable discharge. Active in community affairs, he was past president of the Wendover Horsemans Association and was currently president of the 6 Wendover Medical Board. He is survived by his wife, Georgina Goebel; sons Joseph III, James and John, three .stepchildren, Larry, Debbie and Betty Jo Benson, and three grandchildren, Jimmy, Jacy and Shaun Allen. The Family of LaRue Tabbert Miller, Mrs. Duane (Luann) Fullmer, both of Kearns; Mrs. Jack Peck of Tooele, Utah, who later settled in Auburn, California, Mr. Peck was a resident of Orinda, California at the time of his death. He attended the University of Missouri, receiving his Masters degree in geology in 1939. Mr. Peck had retired from the University of California at Berkeley where he served with distinction as Principal Museum Paleontologist from 1949 to 1979. His colleagues had a saying about him that was inscribed on a plaque (which was presented to him on his retirement) which read: When all else fails, ask Joe. He was a member of many professional organizations, i.e., Geological Society of America, California Malacozoological Society, American Society for the Advancement of Science, American Society of Petroleum Geologists, Paleontological Society of America and others. Also a member Sigma Xi. He served with valor and honor in World War II as a Liaison pilot attached to the Sixth Armored Division. His medals include the Air Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, Selective Service Medal, and three "campaign and service medals including the Victory World War II Medal. He retired from active reserve duty as a Lt. Colonel after having served faithfully and honorably on the sixteenth day of August, 1978.
