The best vines stay in place, have beautiful blossoms and can be grown in almost any location, according to Jerry L. Goodspeed, Utah State University Extension horticulturist. Clematis fits this description. Clematis is well suited for almost any situation in Northern Utah. It is hardy, beautiful and knows how to stay in its place. If it starts getting out of hand, it will not require a backhoe and a large chain saw to remove, said Goodspeed. The most common question I am asked about Iclematis is how to prune ;it. This question is not easily answered since different types of clematis require different pruning methods, he said. There also seems to be a lot of confusion about how .many types of clematis are ; available and what they are called. I will try to shed some light on this. Clematis is a perennial vine that is normally divided into three types. The division is based on where the flowers are borne and when they bloom, said Goodspeed. The first category includes clematis that bloom in the spring. These are the clematis, sometimes referred to as Group A. They bloom in the spring because their flowers early-flowerin- g are produced on one- - to wood. This means the flower buds are produced the year before they bloom. two-year-o- ld clematis should be pruned after it blooms. This gives the plant enough time throughout the summer to produce new flower buds for the next year, he said. When pruning this type, leave the woody parts of the plant. These will become the framework for the plant in the future. Train this clematis up a large trellis or wall so the woody parts can remain and continue to grow from year to year, said Goodspeed. Noted varieties of early spring clematis include Blue Jay, The President and all of the Montana series. The second category of Early-flowerin- I g clematis is a little like the first. It includes the large flowering hybrids, or group B. It produces flowers in also on the previmid-Jun- ous e, years growth. However, y make medical decisions for you if you become incapaci- tated.
