Davis for Nephi Memorial Day Airport project 4. 4 Enforcement weekend By Myrna Trauntvein Times-New- s Memorial weekend was mostly peaceful in Juab County. The holiday was full of visitors but was fairly quiet, except for an attempted suicide at Little Sahara Sand Dunes and an party in Chicken Creek Canyon. There were fewer people at the Sand Dunes than in years past, said Alden Orme, Juab County Sheriff. The weather was hot and most people seemed to want to visit cooler places. Boating, fishing and camping were popular. Yuba Lake visitors areas were See Memorial on page 3 H.E. Davis won the bid for the Nephi Municipal Airport A.I.P. Project with the low bid of t $1,224,805. Four bidders submitted bids the project with the high bid coming in at $1,580,792.50, said on Randy McKnight, city adminis- trator. The weather for the rest of the week will be partly cloudy with some thunderstorms in the afternoons, but just right for swimming with highs most days in the 80s Vandalism causes early closure of the Old Gym for the summer at the recreation facility. They had By Myrna Trauntvein Times-New- s Correspondent The Old Gym Recreation Center has been closed for the summer which occurred a bit earlier than usual because of an act of vandalism by a teen. We have young people go into the Old Gym and do service projects to make it a nice place for kids, and then, we have one kid who does something like this, said Chad Brough, mayor. Recently, youth from the community, had completed some projects repaired holes, painted, and done other projects to make the facility more attractive. On the heels of that event, one young person went inside the Old Gym and broke windows, marred walls and did other acts of vandalism. The Nephi City Police Department did catch the teen allegedly responsible for the acts of vandalism and he will be facing a judge in juvenile court. would like that young person to come and meet w ith the council, I said Rrough. I know that wont be possible, we probably will not even know his name, but I would like to tell him how 1 feel about what was done. It does get hot inside the Old Gym in the summer and so, as a result of the heat and the lack of means to cool the building, the facility is usually closed for the summer. After winter sports season, basketball being the primary one, indoor skating, and other activities planned for the recreation center, the gym is routinely closed for the Good Sams Club Jamboree brought enthusiastic participants to Nephi summer. This year, the closure was a bit early, but not much. When the sun is up longer in the evemng, it shines on the windows upstairs and causes it to get hot, said Randy McKnight, city administrator. People who are using the Old Gym climb up and open the window's and then forget alxiut them allowing bats and birds to get inside. Those who still would like to have a game of basketball at the recreation center can contact Neal Menlove and get a key. They then are responsible for closing up after themselves and making certain the building is secure. The key is then returned to Menlove. Some residents of the community have complained that lights are sometimes left on, which could lx? solved if a timer were installed. Nevertheless, the lights are not the expense to the city that acts of vandalism are. "The lights burning an hour or so, until they are noticed, is a minor expense compared with the cost vandals and their acts are to the city," said Brough. events can still be held at the Old Gym, said Brough. The amount is less than anticipated. Since the bids were lowrer, perhaps some of next years work may be moved up to this year. Of course, that will depend on the federal government. The city w'ill need to apply to allow more of the work to be bid in this calendar year. The federal government, who is funding the project, will then determine if that work can be done. Enough money would be left to do some of the apron work, said McKnight. Money for the project is coming from the federal government in the form of a grant and will be awarded in three years to cover three phases of construction. All bids were due May 28 and bids were awarded at council meeting on June 2. This part of the project is for excavating, fencing and some electrical work, said McKnight. During this phase of the project, a road, which Juab County Commissioners voted to relinquish use of, will be closed since earthwork needed to make the airport larger will take place on a portion of the roadway. The county is going through the actions needed to close the road, said McKnight. A public hearing will be required. The city will be required to do work as part of the some in receiving commitment citys the federal grant. However, that work will be determined by the general contractor. That meeting will, mo4 likely, be held at 6 p.m. By state statute, the council should adopt the budget by June, 22." said McKnight. That means that a public hearing needs to be held prior to the adoption of the budget. Since it would not give the council time to consider the public input they might receive, if the budget were adopted the same night as the public hearing, the council decided they would like to hold the public hearing earlier in the same week. Typically, when the 22nd falls during the weekend, the public hearing and meeting to adopt the budget are held earlier in the month," said McKnight. |
