The Johnson City outcome-base- d education model has been accepted by the board and the district. A recent trip which was planned and which would not have cost the district any money was refused and the project denied mostly because of the travel restrictions placed by the board. Funds would have come from a grant, and would not have cost the district any money. That was not even district money, said Ricks. Five staff people were denied the trip to New York. The government was willing to pay and still the trip was turned down. The expertise iii OBE is not in San Francisco. I think the district needs to weigh how any decision will directly affect the students in the district, she said. Leon Pexton, board member, said he thought the trip to San Francisco would benefit school board members. A textbook which had served as the basis for a successful new district program had been discovered at the last convention. In addition, he said, the OBE trip was not dead but had been denied because thi request was poorly presented tc the board in an Oh, by the way manner, Pexton said. Anti though the trip was denied on the basis of the travel restriction, the schools involved were having trouble with budgets. The schools would need to put some money into the trip to New York though money from a grant could be used so that no money would come from the dis- trict at all. We have embarked on the outcome-base- d education prowith tenacity and sessions gram and information there on that program can help keep the board attuned. he said. Nevertheless, on the suggestion of board member Jerry Bosh and elementary school PTA member Alice Ricks, the board tabled until later in the year the decision on whether to attend the convention. This district did not go to Miami, Fla. when the convention was held there because of finances, and the board continued to function, said Bosh. He said everyone had been asked to take cuts and in his opinion, the trip to the school homd convention would be of greatest benefit only to school board member-elec- t Barbara Weeks. We will not do a worse job because we do not go, said Bosh. There is too big a shortfall in the district this year. The benefits do not outweigh the expense. Ricks agreed.
