FOR WINTER No matter how carefully you prepare your car for winter driving, you can never been certain you wont get stalled in one of Utahs winter storms. Leon Hunsaker, USU Extension safety specialist, says one way to prepare for winter stalls is to keep a basic winter emergency kit in your car. The kit should include a steel shovel, matches, candles or several containers or canned heat, a large metal can, two plastic bags or large sheets of plastic, sand, flares, and a flash-figh- t. Hunsaker says the shovel and sand will help you get out if you get stuck. The candle or canned heat can be used to heat drinking water in the gallon can, or they may be used as a foot warmer. The garbage bags are good insulators if you must step outside the car. If you do get stuck, Hunsaker advises that you stay with your car. Its your best shelter, he says. Run the car only 10 minutes every hour. You'll stay warm enough and conserve energy. When you run the engine, keep the window cracked for air and make sure the tailpipe is not covered with snow. If it is covered, deadly exhaust fumes could back up into your car. "Keep the gasoline tank at least half full, Hunsaker says. Youll need the gas to help keep you warm if you get stuck. And when you do stake trees, says Fred Baker, USU Extension forester, remove the staking as soon as the trees roots can support the tree. Baker says staked trees will grow less in trunk diameter near the ground but more near sup- ported areas. Theyll also develop a smaller root system and have a weaker trunk at the point of support. trees should be Most bare-rostaked for at least the first year, Baker says. Consider staking trees that have dense branches, conifers, and trees that appear If you decide to stake a tree, dont tie young trees so tightly that they cant move. After the trees are established, remove the braces. Staking materials could be wide canvas, strapping, or carpet strips of indoor-outdoin which' grommets have been set. The strapping should be at least three inches wide. Dont use cords, wires, or bands.
