Following her first official appearance at Cotton Bowl activities in Dallas over New Years, she spent the month of January learning about latest developments in cotton and research currently in progress. Now shes putting what she learned to work in "showing others. At a press conference in Washington, Kathryn told reporters, Whether Im wearing 100 per cent cotton clothes or not isnt news. A bulky-weav- e cotton in toast and white plaid, the ensemble features a softly gathered skirt and midwhite length jacket. A bow-neccotton blouse complements the wide, white leather belt. e The Times-New- s starving masses with protein extracted from cottonseed is news. "Its important to me that protein from cottonseed can be added to a soft drink or a candy bar or a loaf of bread and give a child his full days requirements of protein instead of empty calories, she said. And this applies to us here at home, too, just as much as overseas. Even though we probably eat more here in the United States than anywhere else in the world, a lot of what we eat is just junk and certainly not a balanced diet. In spite of the hubbub that unavoidably surrounds her travels, Kathryn retains a sense of reality. In talking about her tour across the U.S. and to Canada and Europe, Kathryn says, "Sure, its glamorous and fun, but its a lot of work, too. My job and it is a job is to help tell as many people as possible what the cotton industry is doing to bring them a better way of life. The Maid points out that many people think of cotton as li, Utah May 8, 1975 v 'THEFT: being important only in the South. But she notes, "When things are good for cotton, things are good for the automotive and equipment workers in Detroit, the bankers in New York, and the chemical manufacturers in some other city. "Another thing a lot of people dont realize is that cotton research led to the development of durable press, flame retardant finishes, and fabrics. Kathryn doesnt usually get into a lot of technical or economic talk, but her knowledge covers a pretty wide spectrum. For instance, she recently told a civic club meeting about cottons importance in the international field: "Cotton and other agricultural exports have a great effect on our international balance of payments. They are one of the few items of international trade that have given us a credit balance in recent years. Turning to still another area, she continued, "And were working to help clean up the environment, too. If we can eradicate the boll weevil and we have the means to do it now it will eliminate the use of almost of the chemicals presently used to control insects. Then we can make greater use of the natural predators of insects harmful to cotton." Kathryn seems to have always been involved in one way or another. A member of Whos Who in American Colleges and Universities, she is on both the college yearbook and newspaper staffs and serves as secretary-treasure- r of the Journalism Students Association Production Board. She was a member of the MU Womens Diving Team and has a love for horses. Both of these skills were utilized during summers as a camp counselor and riding and waterfront instructor. A graduate of Sikeston High School, she was a member of both the marching and concert bands and on the newspaper and yearbook staffs. She was also tapped for Quill and Scroll and the National Honor Society. Kathryn is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alton A. Tenkhoff. Her father is a pharmacist, and she has an older sister and a younger brother.
