Show Ludlow, CUP head, defends water project .When we talk about our environment, we should talk about trout streams and forester mountain sides, backpacking and hiking. But, at the same time, we also must talk about providing enough water so; that our children can continue to live here in Utah ; so Utah farmers can improve more of our arid land, providing more and better foodstuffs; and we: must talk about such d subjects as being able to water our lawns. We must talk about Utahs total environment. Mr. Lynn Ludlow, general manager of the Central Utah Water Conser- ' above normal precipitation recently, this water, which actually belongs to others, has been available to Salt Lake County. But this condition wont last forever, Utah must have the Central Utah Project, Mr. Ludlow said. taken-for-grante- vancy District, sponsor The Central Utah Project was conceived and is being authorizing of the Central Project, told Salt Lake Utah Kiwan-ian- constructed ;The environmental to meet both present and future water needs of the State. This simply is not true. The fact is that areas of Salt Lake County are today living on borrowed water. Because Utah has experienced trade- required by the Central Project have been studied, Water from the Uinta Mountains, which now flows out of Utah via the Green and Colorado Rivers, will be captured and stored by the Central Utah Project. The potential harm to Utahs environment is minimal, even when considered by itself, and it is really very small when compared to the tremendous benefits which will come to Utah as a result of the Central Utah Project, he said. When we talk of our total environment, of both protecting and enhancing our presnet environment, and of providing for the future, that is when we must consider the trade-off; the surplus water that environmentalists claim we have. If we were to use all the surface and water along the Wasatch Front (one of the main alteratives proposed by the Sierra Club), we would dry up the Great Salt Lake, including the managed and unmanaged wildlife sanctuaries. No one is in favor of drying up the Great Salt Lake and destroying these wildlife sanctuaries. The water experts have chosen the most beneficial water plan with the least We do not have s. Research is being done to make sewage water cleaner so as to improve the environment, but according to the Utah epartment of Health and the American Water Works Association, we still have not arrived at a stage of technological development which would make it practical or safe to treated sewage into the drinking water supply.
