Just 11 months ago the mammoth project was dedicated with thunderous dynamite blasts and considerable political oratory at the dedication site on the desolate rim of Starvation Canyon three miles northwest of Duchesne. The ceremony was under the direction of the Central Utah Water Conservancy District, Orem the wholesale agency to sell water from the entire Central Utah Project. Work then began on the first three projects making up the Starvation Complex: Starvation Contract Let In December, a contract was let by the Bureau of Recla-m- a tion for construction of the Water Hollow Tunnel to carry water from Water Hollow Creek to the present Strawberry Reservoir, which later will be enlarged. Another major contract was scheduled to be let April 30 by the Utah State Department of Highways (which does the engineering, while the Bureau four-mi- le of Reclamation picks up the construction tab) for the major bridge involved in relocating U. S. Highway 40. Existing route of the highway would be submerged by the Starvation Reservoir. The entire Bonneville Unit of the Central Utah Project, which will take an estimated 15 years to complete, will provide tremendous irrigation and recreation benefits. It will produce enough municipal water for the heavily populated Wasatch Front areas to meet the needs of an increase of more than And It will 300,000 persons. provide power enough from the hydroelectric plants to supply the needs of a city of more than a million population. What is the status today of the first five major projects and what can the traveler along U. S. 40 expect to see accomplished this working season? Work began last spring on the Starvation Complex and will begin this spring on the Strawberry Complex. These projects are under the ion of Union Pacific (ANEW BATHROOM FLOOR COSTS ONLY $16.30) ing project. Here a mechanical mole, a huge machine with cutting discs in its head, will begin biting out a tunnel 12 feet in diameter, working north and east from a point about 1,500 feet north of U. S. 40 to Water Hollow Creek. Another part of the Strawberry Complex is the relocation of U. S. 40, south of its present route. First project here is construction of a 1,641-folong steel girder bridge over a portion of Strawberry Reservoir, but this strenth will be submerged when the reservoir 50-to- FLECTO seamless Work Progresses On Bonneville Unit Reprinted from the Wasatch Wave, Heber City Vt NEW A Permanent Roor . , PAINT IT ON!
