For twenty years she dreamed about the day when finalshe would ly have some peace and quiet around the house, and could get to all those things that she had put off. hardly They seemed important by Gary Torres people; and moms in particular, are always whispering prayers. My experience has led me to believe that whispered prayers are often our most sincere prayers. Last week, my too kind and loving wife whispered a prayer that the wind wouldnt blow during the parade, because she didnt want to be responsible for 26,000 napkins (used to build the alumni float) flying across town. I noticed Eddie Allred was whispering a few prayers when the storm clouds piled up on the horizon during the tournament. Both baseball prayers were answered. Summer is sliding away fast and sooner than you can lose five pounds, we will be watching football games, yelling at the referees while huddled up in sweat shirts and blankets. I know several exhausted mothers who have whispered a prayer that school would get started. But don't let that fool you, because as much as they want a little break, none of them can stand to watch their little ones gnnv up and leave. One lady cried because her youngest was going to kindergarten. I watched as she carefully straightened out his shirt and then licked her fingers and tried to comb his unruly turkey tail down before sending him off to school. She turned, sniffled, and wiped a tear away; then whispered a little prayer, and told him that she would be there to meet him after school. whisper a little prayer. The photo on the dresser reminds her of his first hair cut. Those silky little locks of hair that were so unruly and never looked combed. She sniffled after the hair cut, because standing before her was a little boy. He tried to comfort her, Dont cry mommy... it didnt hurt very much and it will grow back. As he grew older, she remembers closing her eyes when he would get hit on the football field and whispering a little prayer. She remembers when he got his mission call to a foreign country. That same country had been in the headlines because someone had somehow decided that violence against Americans was the answer to all their problems. Now, while cooking supper, she listens to the news and whispers a little prayer; praying that there hasnt been another random senseless killing in the name of When she went home to an empty house she cried now. But now that so quiet, she wished that she could hear the chatter of small voices, or the excitement of a new discovery, or see muddy footprints across the floor, or find a small child sharing his peanut butter sandwich with the it was puppy. She remembers feeling this way when she gave away all the baby clothes. It was so final. No more babies in her house. She remembers tender feelings when he boldly announced that he didnt want to sleep in his crib any more... that he wanted a bed. Moving from his crib to a bed seemed like such a big, final, and God. As many years as she prepared and looked forward to her little boy unnecessary step. just couldnt help but cry ing She wouldnt let her husband take the crib down and put it in the shed. The next several months she could hear the patter of small foot steps and big brown eyes looking around the corner of the door frame. Mom, if youre scared I could sleep with you. That crib had cradled all of her children. Babies that had kicked, waved, laughed and squealed when she played with them; babies that burned with a high fever and lay limp and vulnerable.
