Casey Foundation, a private charitable organization, whose primary mission is to foster public polreforms, icies, human-servic- e and community supports that more effectively meet the needs of todays vulnerable children and families. The report ranked Utah 9th in the U.S. based on 10 indicators of child While the 9th place ranking is good, it is down from a ranking of 5 in 2000. The state saw negative results in the areas of infant mortality, death rates, teen death rates and the percent of chil- dren in poverty. The percent of babies, teen birth rate, and percent of children in single parent households improved. The report contains information on demographics, health, education, and economic security including: Utahs worst ranking was in our child death rate which worsened by 15 percent from 2000 to 2002. The report indicates a child death rate of 23 per 100,000 children (higher than the Nations rate of 21) and ranks us 26th among all the states; our best ranking as in the area of children living in single parent households. We ranked best in the nation with 17 percent; Utahs child poverty rate worsened by 20 percent between 2000 and 2003, though we still ranked 5th in the na- - on the Thursday - P FM. g. low-birth-wei- August Monday 1 SJC Commission, 10 a.m., Commission Chambers, Monticello. The report contains a wealth of information on the economic condition of Utahs children including: 5 of our children live in extreme poverty (income low 50 of the poverty level); While we rank 5th in the percent of children in poverty, we rank 18th in the percent of children living at 200 of be-chi- ld poverty; of our children in families spend more than 30 of their income on housing; In general, Utah compares well with the rest of the nation on many of the indicators that Kids Count tracks, says Terry Haven, director of the Kids Count Project for Voices for Utah Children. However, we are beginning to see setbacks in several key areas of child that will need to be watched closely. The report may be obtained at Voices for Utah Children or can be accessed on the web at 65 low-inco- well-bein- g www.kidscount.org. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today issued its final environmental impact statement (EIS) for the Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action Project Site, located on the bank of the Colorado River. The EIS details the preferred option of removal of the tailings pile and contaminated materials, along with ground water remediation. The tailings will be moved, predominately by rail, to the proposed Crescent Junction, Utah, site, more than 30 miles from the Colorado River. Taking all facts into account, we believe the recommendations issued today provide the best solution to cleaning up Moab and protecting the River, Secretary of Energy Samuel Bodman said. The Colorado River is the of the Southwest. In 2001 Congress transferred responsibility for cleanup at Moab to DOE. The Moab Project Site is a former private uranium ore processing facility about three miles northwest of the city of Moab in Grand County, Utah, on the west bank of the Colorado River at the confluence with life-bloo- d Moab Wash. The site covers roughly 400 acres and includes a 130-acr- e uranium mill tailings pile that occupies much of the western portion. and local agencies participated with DOE in the development and preparation of the EIS. DOE released a draft EIS in November 2004. During a public comment period, DOE conducted four public hearings on the draft EIS in Moab, Green River, Blanding, and White Mesa, Utah. In preparing the final EIS, DOE considered all comments it received. DOE will specify its final decision on which alternatives to implement in a Record of Decision, to be issued no sooner than 30 days after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issues a Notice of Availability of the final EIS in the Federal Register. Copies of Remediation of the Moab Uranium Mill Tailings, Grand and San Juan Counties, Utah, Final Environmental Impact Statement will be placed in the Moab Project public reading rooms in the Grand County Public Library, Blanding Branch Library, and the White Mesa Ute Administrative Building. A copy will also be available on the Moab Project website 90-da- y at http:gj.em.doe.govmoab. on the DOE website at www. eh.doe.govnepa. and in the DOE Public Reading Room in Grand Junction, Colorado.
