Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday, March 9, 2005 - Ra?e Program Consider the Foster Grandparent ber of the Foster Grandparent 12 CaveMan Club Award wrote a Many months ago column about coaching high school sports. I made an invigorated plea that all the head coaches should be high school faculty and that it would be better if assistant coaches were from the commuI nity. My rationale was that when coaches are in the high school they interact with the kids that are on the fringe or that are project you start with a good foundation. That foundation is built in elementary school. He recruits enthusiastic assistant coaches from the community and gives them support. He started the Rowdy Boys several program Ked and years ago Musselman and RL Wilcox are doing an awesome job! We their arm around them and put walk them to class or practice. And I believe it is easier to recruit kids when by Gary Torres you know all the kids by name and see them plained think recruiting struggling or fringe kids that would other wise be nonproductive and may even be disruptive gives them purpose and a sense of belonging. Often times; they can significantly help your program. I think Coach Mike Bowring did this well. I He recognized that not every kid he recruited would be a big help. He would say, football will be better for him, than he will be for football. But every once in a while, his love of the kids and recruitment of struggling or fringe kids filled a huge hole in his teams. or gram for other sport programs if we want to be successful. So to a head coach not in the school I give him a Cave Man Club Award. As always, I say too much too often so it may take a couple of sittings to eat all my words. I wonder why Adair has had success in a major competitive 2A sport. It comes down to this; he cares about kids and it shows in how he coaches, how he does his job, and how he works in the community. But he doesnt stop at coaching the varsity; he is interested in the elementary kids because he knows that skinny first graders grow up to be beefy seniors. He certainly doesnt get paid for all his extra work, concern, efforts, and ideas. He does it because he loves the sport and the kids. Coach Adair considers himself the head coach for wrestling for the community. So he is involved at every level. lie too much time teaching his players basic skills. If a varsity program is having to teach fundamentals when the players are in a varsity program, the program will never succeed. They will muddle in mediocrity and some of lifes lessons they could have learned, will be just that - mediocre. think Coach Adairs example is one that all the coaches can learn I duct, Confidentiality Agreement, Drug Free Workplace, and Code of Ethics as provided by the Volunteers of America, Utah.
