Show Concerned about Visitor Center plans THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday, March 9, 2005 Dear Editor: l am dismayed by Monticello City Councils apparent abandonment of a plan to add the new visitor center to the Frontier Museum. Does this mean that those who envision a museum visitor center as phase one of a Monticello Heritage Square project also abandon their plans? Heritage Square, as planned, would be the museumvisitor center; a display of vintage San Juan Record equipment and paraphernalia in a building moved to town from the historically significant Carlisle Ranch; a tractor display featuring the Big-- Brantingham tractor currently valued at over million dollars; and, Youngs Theater across the street from the museum visitor center. Combining the museumvisitor center at 232 South Main makes good sense even without the above mentioned historical attractions. I do not understand why the city council approved the museumvisitor center idea, then commissioned an expensive architectural rendering to facilitate the idea, then did an about face and announced the visitor center would be at the current Monticello library building. from my personal experience as an information person at the current Frontier Museumvisitor center, I know that visitors like the museum and express appreciation and admiration for the barn in which the museum is housed. I wish that Monticello residents who think they dislike the barn could hear the many compliments the barn and museum receive. I applaud Tulli Kerstetter s idea to convert the library into a senior citizen and community center. I live across the street from the library and am acutely aware of the heavy traffic volume on US 191 and US 491. I agree with Kerstetters concern that location the visitor center at City Park will create an extremely hazardous situation (March 2, 2005 San Juan Record). Do those who cite traffic flow on US 191 and US 491 as a reason to locate the visitor center in City Park really expect truck drivers to become visitor center patrons? I wonder (1) why the city council is interested in owning a building as old as the current library building, (2) where do county commissioners plan to put a new Monticello library, and (3) what do county commissioners know about complying with expensive federal regulations governing construction of new library buildings? Is their largesse in disposing of the current Monticello building of the county library system well researched? Is it judicious for the city to accept the building. I guess not only am I dismayed, I am confused... interested, but confused. Joyce A. Martin 4 one-ha- 100-year-o- lf ld Sign your name to letters Dear Editor: Recently I received an unsigned derogatory letter in the mail. It questioned my being a man and challenged me to do a noble looking thing. However, if the person who sent that letter is reading this, I would challenge them to send the letter again, but be man (or woman) AND noble enough to sign it this time. Sincerely & signed, J. Burton Black 0 r The San Juan Health Ser- vices Board, featuring four new members, will have their first meeting of the newly constituted group on Monday, March 14 at 7 p.m. in the San Juan Hospital Conference Room. The board will include a host of new names and faces, with four ents, expertise, and specialties. San Juan Hospital has high tech scanning equipment, inCT scan, cluding digital and an MRI van which visits every week. They join current members Grant Imel and Netty Brack. It is the best of times and worst of times for health care Juan County. San Juan in San Hospital recently achieved one of the highest honors in health care when it was named one of the top 100 hospitals in the United States for the second year in a row. Despite the fact that providing high quality rural health care is extremely difficult, the district board, administration and staff has clearly stemmed the tide of significant financial losses that marked the late 1990s and early 2000s. There are more doctors practicing in San Juan County now than there has ever been, with a wide array of skills and tal clinics open in four locations h and services extending to many areas of the county which have historically been out-reac- underserved. However, despite the many successes, the two health care systems appear to continue on a collision course and the Health Care Board will be smack dab in the middle of it. I wish them the best of luck, in what is certain to be tense times, with significant consequences riding on the potential outcomes. The Science Center in Monticello is no longer a proposed center. It is an actual entity after nearly 150 area residents attended the March 4 Star Party. The next event is the Leonardo Traveling Exhibit in April. 10 minute loan service $100 to $700 No checking account needed Librarian will be difficult to replace Navajo Speaking Staff David Johnson Trenching BY TODAY! 4 Call Us For Prompt And Efficient Service No Job Too Large Or Too Small 0MIlilMMtDo STOP CALL OR 6 Eric Johnson 678-355- 435-:67.8!- 24 435-678-78- 82 LOANS I Gentle Dentistry uiruTechnology re fomo suns Main St, Blandlng, UT Now Open Saturday, 8am - Noon to better 2 S. serve gou SALMON uYoiir Connection to 800-448-34- klR) community.
