Show Bronco - Buck volleyball action Volleyball One of my favorite sports in the recent Athens Olympics was volleyball. I was amazed at the athleticism, ability, and choreography of the team game. I often wondered how the players always knew when to go where, when the short set was com- doesnt hitting, and digging. Number one ranked San Juan hammered the number five ranked Buckaroos in three sets, but not without some rousing play by both teams. These gals are good, they know what they are doing, and where they need to go! Its all too much for me to figure out, but fun to watch. I realized that practice makes perfect. So much so that each volleyball match begins with a full practice session. Have you noticed how long they warm up? I was worn out before the match even started. And then they really started jumping, fail to thrill touchdowns for that 1989 championship team. That 1978 San Juan team is in the record book for interceptions in a season with 22. The most by any team in a season is 33 by the 1997 Grantsville Cowboys. Mustache has two multiple interception games, having lassoed four interceptions in the Bucks win over Layton Christian. He has a long way to go to reach the career interception state record, however, held by Kyle Brady from Tooele with 33. Antonios secret? I just watch the ball, he interjects. Similarly, the homecoming parade also winds its way through the streets of Monticello and past the elementary school, where a couple of hundred orange clad young academies always enthusiastically cheer on the parade, its participants, and the candy that is tossed. It seems that every student in the high school participates in the parade somehow; if not in the marching band, then on their respective class floats, (thus we need another word for float, too. Sink maybe?) The band plays, the cheerleaders cheer, the queens wave. Most have candy that they cheerfully toss to the enraptured school children. I think one student was actually pulling candy out of his tuba this year. Unfortunately, we now appear to need other words for toss and cheerfully. In a Tour de France turnabout, the high school students have become the crazed orange clad Bucks, heaving candy as weapons, not aimed to please the little ones, but maimed to tease as if they were Basques throwing epithets. Actually, the little guys dont seem to mind so much, in their wanton struggle to horde candy. Inevitably, the older elementary kids soon are fir ing the candy back at the high school students in some garish rejoinder of the Spanish tomato fights we periodically see on TV. The annual Tomatina Festival, held in Bunol, Spain every August has been called the worlds largest food fight, when over 240,000 pounds of tomatoes are hurled by the town folk at each other for two hours. The only difference I can see is in the smiles on the faces of the Spaniards chucking tomatoes compared to the grim contortions on the faces of the young Buckaroo faithful flinging tootsie rolls. We need something a little softer here. So, join us next year, for the annual homecoming Grapa-tina- , where high school and elementary Buck fans crazily duck and cover under a barrage of overripe grapes. Remember one thing; in Bunol a bottle rocket signals the end of the Tomatina and the beginning of the cleanup, in which everyone participates. Our signal will be the daily noon siren. See you there!
