However, several local resid exdents have had perience with disasters. Most recently, Daniel and Sue Anderson of Monticello found themselves attending a conference in New Orleans, LA the day before Hurricane Ivan was set to hit the area. The Andersons had one meal in New Orleans before they were evacuated toward Houston. It took several days of backtracking before they were able to make it back home to Monticello. They wish they had had more than one meal in New Orleans. This is similar to the experiences of Troy and Ruth Tibbs of Monticello when a hurricane hit the Washington, D.C. area in an earlier hurricane season. Of course, the most hair raising experience was reserved for Carol and Jimmy Forrest of Monticello, who were in Washington, D.C. during the terrorist attacks on September first-han- 11, 2001. Bennett and Dr. Gary Shumway for their awards from the Utah Historical Society for Blue Mountain Shadows (see page 7). The historical periodical con- tinues to amaze with informative, instructive and interesting research on the history of this remarkable area. It is truly an amazing publication for this small corner of the world and worthy of every accolade it receives. It is with sadness that residents of San Juan County mark the passing of Don Palmer. Don, for many years the owner of San Juan Mortuary in Blanding and Moab, has provided a tremendous service to those in need. The value of his service is felt and acknowledged by those who have been beneficiaries of it. I last visited with Don during the recent funeral of Marine Lance Corporal Quinn A. Keith, who was killed in action in Iraq. The funeral service was the first local serviceman killed in action since Dons brother, Lyle Clint Palmer, was killed in the Vietnam War.
