Their names are Mr. Richard Laursen, and Lt. Bill Christensen. Mr. Laursen is the caseworker, and Mr. Christensen is the jail commander at the San Juan County Jail. In the short time that Mr. Laursen has been working with us they have either established, or helped to establish a number of useful programs that are truly beneficial to our rehabilitation. The first of which is the USU college program. We, my fellow inmates and myself, feel that a lot of our problems with the real world, as we call it, is that we had neither the skills nor education to keep pace in todays America. Now, thanks to the accessibility of this program we can get the education needed to function as productive members of society. Something beneficial to all. They have also established the Life Skills classes. In this program we are taught the fundamentals to deal with the problems of everyday life choices. Which may seem easy to most but are obviously harder for us. We learn to manage stress, anger, and the little habits that drive most of us to do the things that make us criminals in the first place. Some of us may feel that they are the south end of a horse heading north. But that is only because they are brutally honest in their dealings with us. Sometimes that is a rarity in todays system, and believe it or not, quite refreshing and welcome. Of course, the San Juan Jail Administration and its staff cannot be left out of any form of praise, for without their allowing, and finding these beneficial programs, and people like Mr. Laursen and Mr. Christensen to run them, we would more than likely fall back into the criminal behaviors that brought us here in the first place. Something that you, as society, and most if not all of us inmates neither want or desire. In the 26 months that I have been at this facility I have seen it go from a bleak, dismal place full of hatred and despair, hatred of the authority it represents and places upon us, and despair of the knowledge that there is no way to change either our situation or the behaviors that brought us here. It is now a place filled with the ray of hope. After all, isnt hope the beginning of change? Most of these programs have been implemented in the short time that Mr. Laursen has been working at this facility. That is why I believe he, Mr. Christensen, and the staff at the jail should be commended. Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter. Simple message for the Christmas season Dear Editor: Isaiah 60:1-- 3 (1) Arise and shine for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. (2) For darkness shall cover the earth and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will rise upon you, and His glory will appear over you. (3) Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawning. As I grew older and my kids grew older Christmas slowly began to lose some of its excitement. No longer did my children have the excitement they once had when they would spend hours with the Wish Book circling the things they hoped would be under the tree on Christmas morning. Seeing Santa in the Mall was not the same experience either. Little by little and year by year Christmas got to the point for me that it just was not what it once was and a lot of the fun was replaced by the duties that came along with the season. The decorating, shopping, the crowds, parties, and all the rest left me feeling glad when it was finally over. At any time during the season it was not hard to get me into a conversation about all the things that were wrong with the way we celebrated Christmas today. Then a few years ago, I went through a period in my life when the road of life was filled with rocks and some unexpected bumps. It was in this low time, in the humdrum of a Christmas season, I heard the scripture Arise and Shine. In those dark moments of my life I came to hear this scripture in a new way, and through it (please turn to page 3) 'yS'cw fljcaivi ocs 6vlcbtHition Did. the holiday leave you drained ?
