Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday, October 27, 1999 - Page 20 circles. When one is caught up in a whirlwind of activity, it is well to remember that the secret to getting things done is found in knowing what to leave undone. Ive been locked in survival mode the past few months, which means I go around chanting, Laundry, garbage, Tempest in a Teapot If this years hurricane season were a documentary, it would undoubtedly get a five star rating. Do you remember the old dishes. Laundry, garbage, joke about hurricanes being named only for women, otherwise they would have to be called himacanes? dishes. If I can keep those three chores under control its anticipated this year to be the one where I would get my home organized, but so far it She hadnt happened. I and blushed until laughed regretted having said anything at all. What makes you think you can have a whole year? she asked, still chortling gustily. Most of us only get an occasional day to get out our pitch-fork- s. Okay, I admit it paced and furious, and Id probably have never gotten Nevertheless, Ive been reduced to the stratagem: My idea ofhousework is to sweep the room with a glance. When I was a kid, I secretly hoped a hurricane would be named after me, but I didnt stand much of a chance. That was when they chose from a permanent list of 210 classical womens names and my name was neither classical nor strictly feminine. Its been a long time since I wished for Hurricane Terri, but my wish has come true, albeit blown a bit off course. As I stormed about the house amidst squalling kids one recent day, I wailed to my husband, Ive never run so hard so fast, and accomplished so little. All I can figure out is that I must be running in amazing how much else can blow by. Nevertheless, Ive been reduced to adopting the stratagem: My idea of housework is to sweep the room with a glance. And Ive caught just enough glimpses of the countertop in my kitchen and the floor in my family room to be assured that they are both still there; and someday soon, when things calm down a bit, I hope to do some excavating. I made the mistake of mentioning this to someone the other day, adding that I had - life is fast or- ganized like I wanted to before I came back to writing, but its time to keep promises. Life in a Nutshell returns, but if your life is like mine, youll probably be grateful for a more condensed column. The new look wont include a title change, although I had a blast considering it. It was a delightful way to celebrate what Freda proclaimed to be her 48th birthday - complete with a picture perfect sunset and full harvest moon. In the seven years Freda has lived in her adopted homeland endeared herself to many personality. As a handful of guests were departing, someone made the observation that one difference between a Gentile and a Jew is that Gentiles leave without saying goodbye, while Jews say goodbye and then dont leave. Its good to have such relationships: where visiting is as enjoyable as savoring superb chocolate, and parting company is possible only after sweet memories are wrapped securely in bonds of friendship. Happy Birthday, Freda. Thank you for sharing your life with us. 251 N. MAIN MONTICELLO ever, I decided Terris Tempest in a Teapot sounded rather frivolous, like Im putting on airs, or worse yet, am just an old blowhard.
