He is the perfect example of the prudent advice to keep ones eyes wide open before marriage and ever after. half-sh-ut for- These few observations on My younger sister Valorie had come home from college to prepare for her wedding. As I was helping her and my mother with decorations one day, Valorie sighed and then exclaimed, I can't wait until I get married, then I can get out of this rat race. My mothers laugh was Tell her, instantaneous. coached she me, tell her that when you get married youre not leaving the rat race behind! Of course, mother was right. Valories romantic views of marriage were as naive as they were idealistic. It reminded me of a friend who once proclaimed, I always thought that the worst thing that could happen to me was to turn 38 and still be single. Then I got married. Her statement reminds me of the couple who have hanging on their bedroom wall the pronouncement This Marriage Was Made In Heaven. Below that, in smaller letters, is written the observation, But then, so is thunder and light- ning. I remember hearing the story about a young man who married a soprano cause he loved her voice. When he saw how she looked the next morning he begged of her, Sing, darling, sing! the marriage relationship come before adding any kids to the equation. After the babies are born, the world revolves around them. With our large family, it seems my husband and I are constantly getting pulled in a dozen different directions. I once told my cousin, It seems that all Tom and I have in common anymore is our children. She gently reminded me, Terri, eighteen children is a lot to have in common. I complain too much about my husband, but what I complain about is that I dont get to see him enough. I miss him and want him home with me; I need his help and resent his absence. When he finally walks in the door I dont know whether to tell him how much I love him, or that Ive hated him every minute hes been gone. Talk about a rat race. Sometimes you have to wonder whos the rat. There are moments when I look at him and wonder if I really know him, if Ill still like him when its just him and me at home. And then there will be a night hes late coming and I begin to worry, what would I do if he never made it? I think how in the mornings I love to roll over and smell the warm, clean scent he leaves on his pillow. I think of those occasions when he compliments me, or addresses me, and I get such a thrill hearing his I know if 111 pause a moment, hell come and open the car door Mark E. Lyman, LCSW for me. I remember the times he buys a candy bar and slips ft into my drawer, or he puts a ten dollar bill into my wallet without saying anything about what hes done. He never lets me leave on a trip until hes checked the tires, and changed the oil that doesnt really need to be changed. When I think about the way he looks when hes reading to, or playing with our children - or when hes whistling as he works on some project - my heart grows with gratitude for the privilege of being his wife. And so I thought very carefully about Valories comment before I responded. Its true, you dont get rat race, I finally agreed, but at least you have someone to share it away from the with. And what more could you ask of marriage than that?
