Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday November 12, 1997 - Page 20 push yourself a little." But if I say three and dont make it, I dont get an A, I pointed out. While researching and writing the article on the College of Eastern Utah San Juan Campus, I could not help but reflect on my own experiences at the col- lege. I had taken classes from Dixie College, Brigham Young University, and Southern Utah University prior to registering at the San Juan Center. The differences began at the outset... When I walked through the door of the I stood in the shadows wondering what to do. There were no signs church-house-tumed-colle- announcing ge Registrar, counselor, or Director. When I heard voices, I fol- lowed the sound until I found Lynn Lee at a desk. I would like to register for college classes," I told him. One of the classes I wanted to take was jogging. Bob McPherson taught it. Bob did not immediately charm me. I introduced myself and told him I was taking his jogging class, then asked what I needed for it. He looked at me and said, Students over 30 years old are not required to Id rather say two and be able to do it." By the side of my name he wrote down three miles. I didnt like that. In fact, I didnt like jogging. I didnt like getting up in the predawn cold to run uphill, I didnt like stretching, or shin splints, or how my legs itched at the end of the run. I didnt like starting my day out hot and sweaty. Maybe it was an unconscious act when I had an ac- cidental fall and injured my knee six weeks into the quarter. Too late to check out of the class, Bob gave me the option of getting a bad grade or running on my own and passing off my required three miles when my knee was sufficiently healed. I chose the latter. I procrastinated for seven months until it was the last possible day to do my running for Bob - graduation day. I hadnt been running as I should have and I asked my brother, Kelly, if he would come to the track with me and pace me. Hes such a nut I knew I could count on him to take my mind off what I was doing and perhaps I could manage the - three required miles. If not, I would once again point out that two miles was my goal. I was sure with Kellys help I could do two miles. Bob was at the track waiting. Ready to do your three miles? he asked, with his usual cheerful demeanor. Two," I answered. Three, he countered. And then, as I took off jogging, he ran alongside. Four, eight, then twelve times we ran around the track. Youve got in your three miles! Bob panted, slowing down. I think Ill keep going, I answered testily. My irritation at having to do what he wanted rather than what I wanted was eating at me. I was thinking about the Bible verse that suggests when someone asks you to go one mile you should go twain. After several more laps Bob dropped out and sat on the grass, waiting for me to fin- degree. I have since taken classes from other institutions: University of Utah, Weber State, and Utah State University. I can honestly say that the classes I took on the San Juan Campus were the best classes I had. My husband received his hundred better things to be doing. But he was there because I needed him to be there. Bob was always there for all of his students, urging them on, demanding their best, offering to help. It was the standard for the staff at San Juan Center. I ran five miles that day. When I came off the track, a me Bob handed crown" for my dandelion But effort." hes "Olympic the one that really deserved the accolades. After all, it was him that set the example for going the extra mile. Because of the help I received from the San Juan Center, I was eventually able to finish my Bachelors Masters degree through BYU Continuing Education classes offered in Blanding. We have two daughters who graduated from CEU-SJ- C, and a son is currently enrolled. I hope to soon begin working on my masters through the USU program that is now in place here. We are indeed blessed to have such educational opportunities in our county. ish. You must really respect this guy to be doing this, Kelly offered as we trotted along. I wanted to argue. Kelly was just 17. What did he know? But as I thought about it, I had to admit he was right. I did respect Bob. He didnt need to be at the track that day. He probably had a take physical education classes." I am not over 30," I responded icily (I was 27). As it turned out I also took English, history, and speech classes from Bob, but the jogging class was most memorable. As part of the ffl a0 (smw&w course. Bob met individually with each one of the students to set a goal of how far they would be able to run by the end of the quarter. The minimum amount acceptable was one mile. Two miles," I told him, thinking I was being generous, perhaps even overly op- timistic. Three," he countered. I looked at him in disbelief. Two! I insisted. I think youll be able to do three, he said.
