Show THE SAN JUAN RECORD Wednesday November 12, 1997 New Victims Advocacy program by Anna Adair An application for a grant under the Violence Against Women Act has been made by San Juan County after the County Commissioners approved a motion to apply for the grant for 1998. The grant, through the office of Crime Victim Reparations, will provide $41,000 to help establish a victims advocate program in the county. The program will include several teams of volunteers and will be managed by the Sheriffs department. The program is designed to help victims of domestic violence recognize their options and make changes in an effort to end the pattern of domestic violence in San Juan County. The advocate and volunteers are trained to counsel victims, help with protective orders, press domestic violence specialist for the Department of Child and Family Services, is concerned because she says San Juan County is the only county in Utah that doesnt have an advocacy program. Macdonald adds, Domestic violence victims need the support of their community and advocates in order to assist them in breaking the cycle of domestic violence. Commissioners are concerned about program funding when the grant expires, stating that the county is not in a position to fund the program in the future.
